more of us discover each other. This
is truly Judaism at its functioning
best.
An illustration is always in order:
Not too long ago, visiting the Land-
shtul Hospital, I met a WAF who
was suffering the pangs of plain,
old-fashioned homesickness. She
had recently been transferred from
the Bremerhaven Port of Debarka
tion to the 320th General Hospital
and was feeling dislodged, unset
tled, and just generally rootless. To
cheer her up I began to describe
our efforts to create an active Jew
ish life in the area — our Sabbath
worship, the charming Oneg Shab-
bats we hold, our bi-weekly Jewish
discussion groups, our monthly
trips and excursions and finally
the splendid JWB Center in Heidel
berg, just beyond the Rhine. It was
wonderful to see her expression
change from melancholy to lively
interest, and when I had finished
she was beaming with delight,
grateful that she had landed in such
a “fertile crescent.” All good stories
should have a climax: Last Friday
night it was our WAF who blessed
the Sabbath candles at our Services
and so fraught with emotion was
her rendition that none of us was
very far from tears.
While I am attached to the Head
quarters Office here at Kaiserslau
tern, 80 percent of my time is spent
away from Hq. Covering 14 in
stallations spread over a very hefty
hunk of geography, 1 am con
stantly on the road or in the air
(we certainly are scattered to the
four winds). Since there are a
great number of units at these
installations that are constantly on
field problems, my work often
makes mi 1 feel like the ancient
shepherd gathering his flock to
gether. And it often happens that
I find a “stray” or two in the most
remarkable places. In a little, out-
of-the-way restaurant one evening,
dining with a friend, I became
aware that a G1 was staring at us
quite intently, the object of his at
tention being my insignia. When he
could restrain himself no longer he
stalked over and practically burst
out, “What a thrill to see a Jewish
chaplain! ' I invited him to sit down
and we chatted for a while and
when he mentioned Rabbi Morris
Lieberman (of Baltimore), who had
solemnized his wedding and done
so with memorable beauty, I told
him that I knew the rabbi and had
seen him at home before leaving
for overseas. This, at once, by a pro
cess of religious osmosis, made me
the C.I’s rabbi: since then we meet
several times a month and discuss
Judaism in all its phases. This kind
of little episode brightens many a
lonely hour for me.
It is pleasant to be able to re
port that the Oneg Shabbat is the
Jewish chaplain’s most satisfying
and successful project. I’m only too
well aware that some people poo-
poo the idea of mixing snacks and
religion, but you can't beat experi
ence — and experience proves the
validity of this type of program.
Here’s a story, for instance, of what
a group of men did on their own.
