for The Israelite to interview him
. . . Name is Roy McClain.
“He was so friendly to the Jew
ish people here and said such nice
things he deserves some attention
. . . Won’t you meet him?”.
So it was that one day soon
thereafter the writer was lunching
with the new minister of the First
Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Rev. McClain is the new minis
ter to 2600 persons. Every Sunday
he can expect his church to be
crowded with around 1200 in
dividuals, He can count on the
presence of eight or nine hundred
at a mid-week prayer meeting.
Of course he is still a new bro
om, relatively having transferred
here within the last month to as
sume one of the most significant
jobs in the baliwick served by
his denominational group. But we
suspect his appeal to his congre
gation is not merely novelty for
Reverend McClain has some
strong ideas about religion and
society and he says them eloqu
ently and well ... He reaches
quickly into the core of problems.
“I want to tell you something
about Orangeburg,” he said. “The
inter-faith climate there is very
friendly. When the community
moved forward on a project, there
never was a question of whether
you were a Christian or a Jew.
We proceeded as citizens of Oran
geburg and ypu could always find
the fifteen Jewish families of the
city doing more than their share.

speak, from three of the com

Remember the games we used to Rlgy? Win or lose by the spin o<
the Oreidel.
We in America are complete winners - a wonderful country to live in,
ail the luxuries of life we can afford and an unlimited quantity of the
choicest foods.
Our friends and relatives in Israel are also winners - but they haven't "hit the jack-
net"- their country is young and progressing rapidly but unfortunately, they suffer
shortages - and the most acute shortage is food.
let us spin the Oreidel for them and make them complete winners!

gether. There was no divisive line
in Orangeburg.
Orangeburg is about forty miles
from Columbia., S. C. where the
Jewish families have congregation
affiliation.
Rev. McClain is a native of
Greenville, S. C., another South
ern community which has a warm
inter-faith atmosphere.
He was interested in the inter
racial and inter-faith climate in
Atlanta and was high in his praise
of Rabbi David L. Zielonka of
Tampa. He had met Rabbi Zie
lonka on several occasions and
terms the Tampa spiritual leader
“one of the outstanding men 1
know.”
What people of goodwill want
to do, he stated, is to “give rise to
a decent world in which to live."
He believes that contrary to what
some people think, this status
with an elimination of bias and
hate and distrust will not result
from education.
“Did you know,” he asked, “that
in Hitler’s stQrmtroopers there
were forty-three percent who
were graduates of old continental
universities, many of them hold
ing masters degrees and even
Ph.D.’s?”
He added, “Japan prior to 1940
was considered the most literate
country in the world. Yet all this
education did not make them
peace-loving nor civilized.
“We’ve been knocking ‘ ourselves
out in one direction, trying to go
horizontally in the fields of sci
ence and knowledge.
“But we must make progress
lateraijy too, in our relationships
between God and Man. This is
why I am not placing all my emp
hasis on education in my congre
gation. We must cultivate this
lateral relationship, our spiritual
values . . . We must be patient and
learn to live together . . . We need
religion for only through religion
can we achieve the better world.”
