Massed To Be Honored At Israel Bond
Testimonial Dinner November 18
Ben J. Massell, master builder
and civic leader will be the guest
of honor at a testimonial dinner
to be held November 18 at the
Progressive Club, it has been an
nounced by the Atlanta Commit
tee for State of Israel Bonds.
He will be the recipient of an
award for distinguished service to
the economy of Israel.
“I am happy to have the privi
lege of arranging this significant
dinner,” declared I. M. Weinstein,
Southeastern Bond Chairman. "If
over a tribute was richly deserved.
It is this one. No one has contri
buted more to a greater variety of
worthwhile civic causes than has
Ben Massell. I know there is go
ing to be a record turnout for the
testimonial dinner, just as I know
that Ben Masseli will be gratified,
not for personal reasons, but be
cause the future of Israel is close
to his' heart."
“It is essential,” Mr. Weinstein
pointed out, “that the Jews of
America give renewed and en
larged evidence of their deep con
cern for the economic stability of
the State of Israel in order to
enable it to meet successfully the
challenge of growing anti-Semi
tism in Russia and other countries,
foreshadowing grave danger for
millions of Jews.
“In recent months the young na
tion has been making remarkable
progress in its ambitious program
of wiping out desert and swamp
areas and developing an all-Israel
water scheme. In the north, in the
Lake Huleh sector, 25,000 acres
of swamp land are being drained
by deepening the channnel of the
Jordan River and getting the wa
ter to flow off. Not only is this
land expected to support many
thousands of prosperous farm fam
ilies, but the water that is drained
u-f will be piped down to the
southern desert.
“In addition, since last June,
Israel engineers, with the aid of
Israel Bond funds, have been
building a vast man-made lake in
the Galilee Hills. When completed
it will be more than twenty square
miles in size, three times larger
than Lake Huleh, and will be the
central reservoir of a project
which will link together all of
Israel’s water resources and event
ually make Israel secure from
drought."
“The Israel Bond Issue,” con
tinued Mr. Weinstein, “is the most
Important single source of Ameri
can investment dollars for Israel.
Mr. Massell has been a key figure
in local efforts to promote the
sale of State of Israel Bonds, and
it seems particularly fitting that
the forthcoming dinner in his hon
or should be associated with the
promotion of the Israel Bond
drive, which symbolizes the part
nership of American investors and
the people of Israel in building a
strong, free democratic nation in
the Middle East.
“It is characteristic of Mr. Mas-
seil that he would allow us to hon
or him with a dinner only on con
dition that the theme be one of
practical aid to Israel. He insisted
that his name be used only if the
dinner would focus attention up
on the bonds that unite the Ameri
can Jewish community with the
people of Israel. In accordance
with the wishes" of the guest of
honor, the testimonial dinner will
bring to the attention of this com
munity the urgent importance of
continued American investment in
the future of Israel through the
medium of State of Israel Bonds.”
