his recent pro-Jewish and pro-
Israel statements. More than 2,000
Jewish leaders from this city and

Sabbath as Key to Jewish
Living Marks ’53 Observance
“The Sabbath — Key to Jewish
living — Key to inner strength,"
reiterates the United Synagogue
of America as it begins its third
National Sabbath Observance Ef
fort.
Like last year the initial phase
of the Sabbath Effort will be
synchronized with the program of
the inter-denominational Religion
in American Life Movement,
jointly sponsored by 23 religious
bodies, including the United Syna
gogue of America.
The Religion in American Life
Movement has selected the month
declared: “We love and respect the I of November to emphasize the
Jews since our doctrine is based j values of religious living, and the

of congregations will contact their
less active brethren personally
and by mail to encourage them to
again observe the Sabbath.
The month will see renewed
and reinvigorated activity on the
part of all organizations within
the synagogue. The Sabbath in
Jewish Art, Sabbath Observance
Jewish Living and the United
Synagogue of America, Sabbath
Music from the Four Corners of
the Earth, and the Sabbath in
Jewish Folklore, will be the topics
of special sermons and discussions
during the month.

having had a country of their own,

“young nation of Israel." "May

the small, but great state and the

Among the organizations which

by all constituent organizations of
the Conservative movement. Con

National Drive for the revitiliza-

home and at public worship will
continue throughout the years.

Charleston Man Is Partner
In Israeli Auto Parts Firm
From Charleston Evening Post
CHARLESTON — A Charleston
man and five. other Americans
have just finished their first fiscal
year of operating an auto parts
plant in Israel “in the black.”
Norman Feinberg, 28, son of Mr.
and Mrs. David E. Feinberg, of 35
Race St., and five other Ameri
cans and a South African own and
operate the plant, Mechanical
Products, Inc. Their firm contri
butes to Israel’s economy by re
building automobile parts, thereby
saving precious United States dol
lars, which the young nation needs
for foreign exchange, by elimina
ting the necessity of importing
parts for the country’s 4,500
vehicles.
The six young Americans organ
ized the company a little more
than a year ago, raising $75,000 of
their own money and by sale of
stock to friends and relatives in
the United States. Incorporating in
Maryland, they moved to Hadera,
Israel, on the main road between
Tel Aviv and Haifa.
Mr. Feinberg, who ivas grad
uated from Georgia Tech in 1948,
is married to the former Miss
Zipora Fridman of Ramat - Gran,
Israel, whom he met while she was
visiting in Atlanta.
All members of the firm, with
one exception, were trained in en
gineering. Besides Mr. Feinberg,
they include Alan Zatz, 26, ol
Baltimore, an instructor in indus
trial engineering at Johns Hop
kins; Sumner Kupitsky, 26, oi
Boston, who had worked in his
father’s auto parts rebuilding firm,
Harry Mankuta, 28, the Bronx,
who had worked with the Nation
al Advisory Committee on Aeron
autics, and Asher Gray, 30, of Pro
vidence, R. I., formerly with Lock
heed Aircraft Crop. Mr. Feinberg
had worked in the summers with
South Carolina Power and Light
Co. as a part of his college train
ing program. -

“Observe the Sabbath,” says the
national Sabbath Observance Ef
fort, and you will preserve your
personal perspective, your Jewish
heritage, and your own life. Ob
serving the Sabbath will enable
you to rest up from grind, toil,
and drudgery and give you the
satisfaction and peace that comes
from lifting up your heart and
soul to your Maker.”
As part of the Sabbath Observ
ance Effort congregations all over
the country will receive a reprint
of Rabbi Morris Adler’s article
“Soliloquy of an Empty Pew”
which first appeared in Rabbi

The other member of the firm
is Roy Milner, 26, who w^s an en
gineer with General Motors in
Capetown, South Africa.
All had been college friends,
members of the IZFA, a collegiate
Zionist group, of which Mr. Fein
berg is a former president.
Arriving at Hadera, the young
businessmen, five of whom are
married, moved into their plant,
making partitions out of packing
cases, because of lack of other
quarters.
They set up used equipment they
had brought along and began look-1
ing for business, going out in a j
truck to call on prospective cus
tomers. “That was revolutionary
in Israel,” one of them recalls.
As the business grew, they hired i
j 10 employes, and found out that:
reclaiming used auto parts in
Israel presented problems not
found in the States. Junked autos, I
the source of supply, was scarce I
in the new country, in contrast to
the inexhaustable supply here.
They found they had to adapt
what they could find and make
components or buy them new.
They also found that there was j
no one to whom they could go for j
advice. Problems had to be worked j
out as they arose, since there is
no other plant of the same sort;
in the Middle East.
The Israeli government has rec-1
ognized the firm’s importance to
the nation’s economy by allocating |
foreign currency to bring in junk j
units from the United States and \
to begin its first exports, to Tur- j
key.
Mr. Feinberg, bom in Savannah, j
came to Charleston when he was
10 years old. He attended public
schools here and was graduated
from the High School of Charles
ton. During World War II, he
served with the army in Germany.
The Feinbergs have a year-old
daughter.
Udinsky Bas Mitzvah

Adler’s personal column “May I
Have a Word With You?” in the
Sharrey Zedek Recorder. In the
article the pew complains that he
is not occupied on Saturday and
asks some Jewish family to oc
cupy him.
Congregations will also receive
a booklet titled “The case for the
Five Day Week” in which De
troiter Daniel G. Cullen tells how
a five day week was beneficial
rather than detrimental to his
business.
