BUILT ON SAND?
Is American Jewry building on
sand?. . . This question is being
raised by the publication of the
results of a Jewish education
study conducted in New York. . .
The study establishes that of ap
proximately 270,000 Jewish child
ren between the ages of 5 and 15
attending elementary and junior
schools, only 76,000 were re
ported to be attending some Jew
ish religious class. . . This means
that about 7G per cent of all Jew
ish children of school age in New
York receive no Jewish education
whatsoever. . . Not even Sunday
school education. . . Of those at-
the varfcus types of Jew
ish schools, girls constitute about
rd of the total enrollment.
. . . Most children complete their
elementary Jewish education at
the age of 13, which coincides with
Bar Mitzvah. . . This would mean
age of 13 and the
they enter college and join
a HilH Foundation group — the
very formative years of a teen
ager — Jewish youths are out of
touch with anything that resem
bles Jewish education. . . How
such a state of affairs can affect
the future of Jewish communal j
life is obvious. . . It has long been
pointed out by some leaders in j
the larger Jewish communities
that neglect of Jewish education
work may within one generation
result in a lack of interest on the
part of Jews in their own Jewish
institutions. . . And this at a time
when many millions of dollars are
being spent for new buildings for
such institutions. . .
Some argue that it is high time
for Jewish communities to realize
, . . And they point out that al
locating funds for Jewish educa
tion must be among the things that
are “first” if we want to have
Jews to attend the institutions for
which new buildings are being
built. . . Adherents of this point of
view will find strong backing in
the results of the New York sur
vey on Jewish education. . . The
survey has been prepared bjt Dr.
Israel Chipkin on behalf of the
Jewish Education Committee of
New York.
