Perhaps you don’t know that
Thanksgiving Day has a Jewish
significance The American Pilgrim
fathers were a God-fearing deeply
religious people. These people had
left their home in England and
come to a newly discovered and
still wild land for a reason that
has been familiar to Jews through
out the centuries. They left to es
cape religious persecution.
Thanksgiving to*thank God for His
bounty. This training also made it
natural for them to invite the In
dians to their feast for it has al
ways been Jewish -tradition that
when a feast is held all who may
be hungry are invited to eat.
On Thanksgiving Day as Ameri
cans we can be proud of the hardy
early settlers and as Jews we
can be proud 6f our religious tradi
tion and Holy Book which in
fluenced them so.
GIVING THANKS
An anonymous author has writ
ten the following poem for
Thanksgiving:
For the hay and the corn and
wheat that is reaped
For the labor well done, and the
barns that are heaped.
For the sun and the dew and
the sweet honeycomb,
For the rose and the sing and
the harvest brought home —
Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving!
For the trade and the skill and
the wealth in our land.
For the cunning and strength of
the workingman's hand.
The Joint Committee on Volun

These American colonists were For the KOod that our artists and
thoroughly familiar with, and poets have taught
loved the book of our forefathers, For the friendship that hope and
the Old Testament. From it they
learned of the customs and tradi
tions of the Jews. The early Amer
ican settlers had a great deal in
common with the people they read
about in the Bible. Both were a
sturdy, hard working, God-fear
ing, uncomplaining, agricultural
people. Just as the Jews loved to
study the Torah the early Ameri
can settlers loved religious study.
In the Old Testament the col
onists read of the lush orchards
and fertile fields in Palestine
which produced fine crops because
of the hard work, dilegent care,
and agriculture knowledge lavish
ed on them by their Jewish own
ers and tried to produce such crop
here in America.
Through the hard lean first
years of settlement the American
settlers reverently asked God for
help and appreciatively thanked
Him for His kindnesses just as the
Jews they read about in the Bible
had done for many centurys. In
the Bible they also read of the
Jewish agricultural celebrations,
such as, Succoth, the harvest cele
bration, and the spring celebration
on the fifteenth day of Shvat.
