THE SOUTHERN
This was a terrible time for the
I Jews. The cruel king ordered that
i any Jew who worshiped the true
! God or kept the Sabbath or the
festivals or read the law or re
fused to kneel down to the idol
was to be put to death.
A very, very brave and good
woman named Hannah told her
seven sons to disobey the king and
remain true to their God. She
i hardly had to tell her sons this for
they were as true and loyal to
their God as their mother was.
KIDDIES’ KORNER
HANUKAH FEATURE
Dear Boys and Girls:
Ohcc again the joyous holidays,
HWukah, is with us. It is a time
of candle lighting, singing, play
ing with the Hanukah Trendel
also called Dreidel, eating tasty
delicacies, and exchanging gifts.
On Wednesday night, Dec. 2, we
light the first Hanukah candle.
Hanukah is known both as the
Feast of the Maccabees and as
the Feast of Lights. When I tell
you the story of Hanukah, which
you probably already know at
least something about, you will
discover why the holiday is called
by these two names.

In Modin lived Mattathias Has-1

Jerusalem, took the idols out of
the Temple, and the worship of
the true God started again. In
their honor Hanukah is often
called the Feast of the Maccabees.
The lights of the Temple that had
been put out by the Syrian were
lit and a very small amount of oil
which was the only oil available
for use in the holy lamps of the
Temple lasted for eight days.
We burn one light on the first
night of Hanukah and an addition
al one each of the seven remaining
nights until we have lit eight
lights.
