f They Came No Tougher
George Burns, the Jewish half
tA the famed Irish-Jewish com
edy tandem of Burns and AUen,
•tways likes to talk about the
tough days he lived on the East
Bide.
One thing in particular sticks in
his mind—the vicious gang fights.
“Why,” George recalledd, “I re
inember one afternoon, I watched
• street fight between a gang from
Cherry Street The Stanton Street
kids threw things at the Cherry
Btreet kids, and do you know what
those things were that they threw
—kids from Orchard Street!”

Here’s the newest definition
we’ve heard of a psychiatrist —
“Someone who listens — when no
one else will.”. . . Tommy Ryan,
one of the cleverest comics in the
country, started his career as a
cantor and then switched to a
night club comedian and vocalist
. . . Hy Buller, the colorful Jew
ish star of the New York Ranger
hockey team, is a great lure when
playing at Madison Square Gar
den ,for folks from the nearby
garment center. When Hy becomes
embroiled in an argument with a
foe in which hockey sticks are
used as a method of expression ,his
fans invariably scream encourage
ment with this line—“Hock ’im,
Hymie — Hock ’im Hymie!”. . .
Funnyman Tommy Ford, who has
an Irish name, is Italian and looks
Jewish, brushed off an anti-Semi
tic remark by a lit-up louse who
thought he was Jewish, the other
night, with this squelcheroo —
“You’ve got a head like the Li
berty Bell—cracked!”
George Jessel Fired On
Jester Morey Amsteraam would
like to know if you’ve heard above
the near-sighted porcupine which
fell in love with a cactus plant . .
Danny Stiles, one of New Jersey’s
leading disc jockeys contemplat
ing emceeing a television show in
Gotham, which will spotlight Jew
ish stars. . . Strolling arm in arm
with George Jessel on the Main
’Artery, we learned from him that
while he was in Israel near the
Jordan border, his group was fired
on several times “by peace-loving
Jordanese”. . . Dave Zinkoff, the
announcer who travels all over the
world with the great Negro
quintet, “The Harlem Globetrot
ters,” is a Philadelphia boy. Dave
is very religious, and the first
thing hie looks for in a new city,
whether in this country or abroad,
is a synagogue. . . We like Barney
Ross’ clever definition of horse
sense — “Horse sense is that sense
which a horse has—which pre
vents it from betting on human
beings.”

Milton Ivan Silver, son of Mr.

evening services on December 4.
On Sunday, Dec. 6, Mr. and Mrs.

reception in honor of their son.
Held in the Synagogue Annex, ap
proximately 250 guests were in
attendance with Mrs. Silver’s en
tire family from Atlanta present.
A lavish afternoon meal was
served after which an informal
program, conducted by Dr. Shug-
erman, uncle of the Bar Mitzvah,
was enjoyed by all.
The Sisterhood of the Fitz
gerald Synagogue is sponsoring a
series of talks at its monthly
meetings on, “The Child and His
Development." At the October
meeting William King, principal
of the Fitzgerald High School,
spoke on, “The Child and Educa
tion.” The November meeting fea
tured Dr. John E. Smith, physician,
who discussed, “The Child and
Health.” At the December meet
ing Rabbi Nathan Kohen spoke on,
“The Child and Religion.” Mrs.
Dick Kaminsky is president and
Mrs. Nathan Kohen program
chairman.
A most successful Hanukah
entertainment was held by the
children of the Sunday School.
Every student participated in the
varied program after which
movies of the State of Israel were
shown. In spite of a driving rain
over 100 people attended.
The Adult Bible Class, con
ducted by Rabbi Kohen, has been
attracting a large group of people.
Meeting twice a month, it is pur
suing a course on the structure
and composition of the Bible. Her
bert Sackett is chairman of the
class.
A building committee composed
of Dick Kaminsky, president of
the Congregation; Abe Kruger,
