Brandeis U. Women
Will Hear Actor
Elliott Silvorstein, instructor in
the theater arts at Brandeis Uni
versity in Waltham, Mass., will be
the guest .speaker at a coffee hour
to be held at the Mayfair Club.
Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 7 p. m.

lanta, Mr. Siiverstein will speak
on progress made by Brandeis
University during the past twelve
months, it has been announced by
Mrs. Many Stern, president of the
group in Atlanta. More than six
bundled local women are mem
bers in Atlanta, reported Mrs.
Stern.
A talented director, actor, and
composer, Mr. Siiverstein received
his degrees from Boston College
and Yale University. Joining the
Brandeis University faculty in
1951, he served as director of the
University’s first Festival Of the
Creative Arts in 1952. Mr. Siiver
stein also directed the world pre
miere performance of Leonard
Bernstein’s opera “Trouble in Ta
hiti," which high-lighted the four-
day festival.
Mr Siiverstein has been active
as a director, actor and composer
of little theater groups in New
York and New England since 1934,
and has also acted in a weekly
CBS network feature. In addition,
he has served as Director-Writer
wdth “The Book of Life," a dra
matic radio theater sponsored by
B’nai B’rith.
Mrs. Stern announced that Mrs.
Louis Levy will introduce the
guest speaker, and that decora
tions will be arranged by Mrs.
Irvine Goldstein and Mrs. Julian
Wolf.
The hostesses include Mrs. Louis
Aronstam, Mrs. Abe Goldstein,
Mrs. Joseph Cuba, Mrs. Leonard
Richheimer, Mrs. Stanley Marien-
thal and Mrs. Max Robkin. Others
are: Mrs. Sidney Q, Janus, Mrs.
Harold Marcus. Mrs. Melvin
Brown, Mrs. Alec Miller, Mrs. S
J. Steinbaeh, Mrs. Alfred Agrin
and Mrs. Isadore Cohen.

SAVANNAH — Dr. Harry M.
Kandel, prominent physician, died
here January 4. Funeral services
were conducted by Rabbi A 1.
Rosenberg and Cantor Albert
Singer at Sipple’s Mortuary. In
terment was in Bonaventure Cem
etery, with military honors at the
graveside.
A former president of the Geor
gia Medical Society, Dr. Kandel
also was a member of the Medical
Corps Reserve. He was a member
of the Georgia Heart Association,
the Savannah Heart Clinic and be
longed to the Chatham-Savannah
Defense Council.
He was a veteran of both World
Wars.
Dr. Kandel was active in local
Jewish .organizations and in civic
affairs. He was a life member of
the Georgia Congress of Parents
and Teachers.
For many years he served as
team physician for the Savannah
High School football teams.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Estelle Erwin Kgndel; one son,
George Kandel; two daughters,
Mrs. Hunter Leaf, Jr.. Savannah,
and Mrs. J. R. Paddison. Washing
ton Courthouse, O.; two brothers,
Seymour Kandel and Emanuel
Kandel; one granddaughter and a
number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Constangy was a member
of the Progressive Club, Fulton

For the past five years he had
j been active in the investment bus-
i iness. Prior to that time he had
j been owner of the Royal Laundry
j and two dress manufacturing con
cerns.

Surviving are his wife, the
former Mamie Cohen, a native of
Atlanta; two sons, Frank A. and
Herbert W. Constangy; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Mercer Wolff, McGehee,
Ark, and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Kaufman and her husband
came to America from Poland 33
years ago. She had been living in
Atlanta for 30 years.
They opened the L. W. Kauf
man Grocery at 610 Washington
St. immediately after arriving

grocery.
