$712,949 For New Synagogue
Ahavath Achim Members Pledge
A total ol $712,949 has been
pledged to date through January I
27 for the construction of a new
synagogue for Ahavath Achim
Congregation.
The A. A. Synagogue Bulletin
of February 3 announced to its
members that “in a little over four
months, you have more than
doubled pledges to the new Syna
gogue.’ ’
Pledges received as of October
1 totalled $342,192. An additional
$370,757 was pledged through
January 27.
Goal in the drive is $1,500,000.
The bulletin said that “the num
ber of seats purchased will de
termine the size of the synagogue.”
The first architect’s report meet
ing was scheduled on February 7.
Officers of the current Congre
gational administration spear
heading the campaign include Joe
Zaglin, recently reelected presi
dent; Joe Cuba and Hyman Meltz,
vice presidents; Pincus Koplin,
treasurer; Dr. Irving Goldstein,
recording secretary, and Sidney
Goldberg, financial secretary.
Feldman, Slann Named
Of 1954 Welfare Fund
Because of the enthusiasm and
i devoted leadership displayed in
j 1953, A. L. Feldman and David L.
i Slann have been drafted by the
Board of Directors of the Atlanta
Jewish Welfare Fund, and Frank
Garson, President, to head the
1954 campaign as co-chairmen.
The campaign dates this year
will be exactly the same as last
year: March 22 through May 15,
and since the needs have not in

National Z.O.A. Chief To Be Main Speaker
At Dinner Honoring Benamy anti 40 Members
National Z. O. A. President
Rabbi Irving Miller, of Woodmere,
L. I., will be principal speaker at
a banquet at the Mayfair Club
Monday night (Feb. 15) honoring
Sol Benamy, chairman of the At
lanta Zionist Council, and some
forty other fellow Atlantans for
their outstanding work in behalf
of Israel.
The affair will take the form
of a 50th birthday party for Bena
my, according to Dr. Sidney Q.
Janus, president of the Atlanta
Zionist District. “Sol has devoted
the past twenty years to the cause
of Zion, and it is fitting and prop
er that we honor him on his birth
day,” Dr. Janus added.
Benamy is a past president of
"the Atlanta District, a past presi
dent of the Southeastern Region,
honorary president of the Region,
a member of the national execu
tive committee of Z. O. A., and at
its last meeting the region board
voted him a gold award for out
standing work.
All groups affiliated with the

N. Y. Attorney General Discusses
Role of Einstein College of Medicine
Role of the Albert Einstein Col
lege of Medicine in helping meet
the critical shortage of medical
personnel in the United States was
discussed in Atlanta Thursday
evening by Nathaniel L. Goldstein,
attorney general for the State of
New York.
The visiting attorney general
described the Albert Einstein Col
lege as the nation’s first Jewish-
sponsored, non-sectarian medical
school. It is under construction
adjacent to the $40,000,000 Bronx
Municipal Hospital Center in New
York.
His talk was a feature of a din
ner for about a hundred of the
community’s top business and
civic leaders, to which Frank Gar-
son and Ben J. Massell were hosts.
Dr. Irving L. Greenberg and Dr.
Joseph Yampolsky are serving as j
associate chairmen of the Atlanta j
committee for the medical school.
Nathaniel L. Goldstein
Mr. Goldstein has a distinguish
ed academic career. He graduated
from New York University and the
New York Law School, of which
he is now a trustee. He holds sev
eral honorary degrees, received
the Alpha Epsilon Pi’s medallian
in 1946 for his contribution to
Jewish communal life. Some of
the organizations claiming his
active interest have been the Fed
eration of Jewish Charities, Na-
j tional Conference of Christianss
! and Jews, National Citizen’s Coun-
; cil on Civil Rights, United Jewish
Appeal, Metropolitan Zionist
Fund, the American Jewish Com
mittee, American Legion and
others. As Attorney General, he
had pioneered in combatting juve
nile narcotics, discrimination in
spots and other fields involving
more than just crime.

up as the target for 1954.
Both Mr. Feldman and Mr.
Slann have again demonstrated
their public spiritedness by ac
cepting the responsibility of top
leadership Fund Officials. In rec
ognition of his service to the com
munity ,Mr. Slann was awafded a
special citation by the Gate City
Lodge, B’nai B’rith. A. L. .Feld
man was chosen by the same or
ganization as 1953 “Man of the
Year,” and was presented with
the Distinguished Service Award
for outstanding service to the en-

tire community.
“The continuing great need for
actual life-saving work in North
Africa and in the remaining refu
gee centers in Europe—and the
fact that Israel cannot be left to
stand alone—plus the magnificent
response that our community has
shown to the work of the Welfare
Fund—made me overcome all
doubt and hesitation in again ac
cepting the campaign leadership
this year,” said A. L. Feldman.
“From actual experience I have
found how deeply rooted is the
acceptance of the Welfare Fund by
the Atlanta Jewish Community
and that this is so largely to the

Hadassah Reveals New
Details for Conference
COLUMBUS —Within a few
days, the Southeastern Region of
Hadassah will convene its annual
conference at the Ralston Hotel in
Columbus.
Delegates representing Hadassah
chapters in the states of Georgia
and South Carolina, will gather
from February 21 through Febru
ary 23 ,to formulate a program of
action for the coming year. Dele
gates arriving Saturday night,
Education Bureau Tells Plans for
Third Atlanta Adult Seminary
Plans are being made for the
Third Annual Adult Seminar
which will be held February 21-
23 at the Or Ve Shalom Assembly
Hall, 1362 N. Highland Ave.
Guest discussion leader will be
Dr. Abraham G. Duker, of New
York City, nationally known his
torian, author, sociologist and
editor.
David L. Slann, chairman of the
Atlanta Bureau of Jewish Educa
tion, announced that the visitor
teaches Jewish History and Soci
ology at the New School for Social
Research, at Columbia University
and at the Hebrew Union School
of Education and Sacred Music.
Barney Medintz, president of the
Atlanta Jewish Community Coun
cil, said the membership subscrip
tion is $5 per person. The Seminar
will be limited to 100 members.

Mrs. Aaron Funk, Conference
Chairman, says members of the
Columbus Chapter and the Colum
bus community have given her
committees full cooperation for
the welfare and entertainment o£
Hadassah’s delegation. “Months
and months of planning have
aroused the interest to such a
pitch, that each and every mem
ber of the Conference Committee
is enthusiastically looking forward
to greeting the delegates and
guests. Our own reward, of course,
will be in the knowledge that we
have set the stage for a fruitful
and productive conference, in the
true tradition of Hadassah.”
Workshops and sessions will be
the blueprint of the conference,
each one highlighting its impor
tant place in the overall picture
of the chapter’s needs and activi

president of the Southeastern
Region, announces additional ac
