Dear Editor:
Your Israeli correspondent, Ani
ta Engle, wrote a very lovely de
scription of spring time in Israel,
but I was much surprised that she
should be puzzled by the line “and
the voice of the turtle is heard in
the land.”
The Hebrew word which is
translated as “turtle” in the Song
of Songs occurs frequently in the
Bible in connection with certain
types of sacrifices, and in those
places it is translated as “turtle
dove,” a type of pigeon. Thus the
line in Solomon’s Song of Songs
refers to the soft cooing of doves
in spring time.
To complete this little item of
natural history, it should be men-
tioned that real, reptilian turtles
make sounds too, although Mrs.
Engle has not yet heard them. March 22, 1054

In addition to the event outlined
above, all other divisions are

preparing for advance and special

date.
The physicians and dentist di
vision, under the chairmanship or
Dr. Irving Goldstein and Dr. Jo
seph Yampolsky, has organized a
committee of its members, which,

The Youth Division has or
ganized its campaign and is sched

March 31.
In the religious schools, too, or
ganization work is under way. In
every group and division there
prevades a spirit of enthusiasm
and determination to make 1954 a
banner year.
The needs are real and urgent
and the campaigners are moti

acterized the spirit of giving and
the essence of the Jewish heart:
"Thou shalt open thy hand unto
thy brother.”
