Knesset A-Visiting
By DAVID SCHWARTZ
I was at a reception a few months
ago for the members of the Israeli
Parliament. There are eight of
them here, come to attend the ses
sions of the Inter-Parliamentarv
Conference in Washington and also
to help sell Israel bonds.
Eight members are a good-sized
chunk of the Israeli Parliament.
Dr. Israel Goldstein, who presided
at the reception, remarked that
he had frequently seen the U. S.
Senate conducting business with
less than that many members seem
ingly on hand. You might almost
say the Knesset is holding sessions
in America. I got to wondering.
Suppose Ben Gurion should have
to have a law passed in a hurry.
He would be out of luck. What do
you do, if you awake in the middle
of the night and need a new’ law!
The eight represent all parties in
Israel. I was rather struck by the
appearance of the member repre
senting the Mapam. You expect the
representatives of the extreme left
to have a kind of proletarian look.
Well, Yitzak Ben Aharon certainly
does not meet that expectation. He
looks more like a business execu
tive. Very neat and trim and very
well nourished.
In fact, all the members seem
rather well nourished. They lead
one to question some of the austeri
ty tales that we have heard about
Israel. One of the members of the
Knesset, Haim Ariav, in fact, made
the point himself in answer to a
question about the hard times in
Israel. “Look at us," he said, "all
of us look pretty well fed, don't
we?” He went on to challenge the
grim stories circulated about Israel.
Israel, he insisted, isn't doing badly
at all.
If the rest of the Israelis are as
well nourished as their representa
tives, it is hardly likely that Ma
pam can hope for any great success,
even though they have such able
men as Ben Aharon among them.
For Ben Aharon, it must be con
ceded. is a very eloquent speaker.
It should be said, however, that
on their present visit, party affilia
tions are forgotten. The members
seem to be very courteous towards
one another, irrespective of party.
And it was Rabbi Nurock, repre
sentative of the most religious
faction, who seemed to go out of his
way to praise the representative of
the extreme left. But Rabbi Nurock
has always been a very liberal per
son. Once, speaking at a campaign
rally for an Orthodox Yeshivah, he
remarked that theological luminar
ies were worthy of the support of
all, since they produce not only
the men of great faith, but also the
greatest infidels.
Another thing that surprised me
about these Knesset members is
the excellence of their English.
After hearing them, it occurred to
me that it might be a good idea to
send some of our American Jews to
