CHAS. G. DAY, President
J. GARNETT ANDREWS, Chrm. of the Board
pie, when the Self-Study of the
Alliance brought forth a recom
mendation for the establishment of
a Community Hebrew- School in the
Alliance building, the Alliance
turned over this recommendation
to the Council to study and possibly
implement its recommendations be
cause of its overall community im
plications and the Council accepted
the responsibility for the study of
this problem. At the request of the
Alliance, the Council approved and
endorsed the Capital Fund Cam
paign of the Alliance and also con
ducted the campaign for Capital
Funds in the fall of 1952, by lending
the services of its Executive Direc
tor to do this job. A permanent
committee, composed of representa
tives of the Alliance and the Coun
cil, has been set up to consider any
problems which may emerge in the
relationship between the two agen
cies, which has been a healthy one
and a mutual beneficial one.
A further instance of response to
need came in the spring of 1951,
when, with the influx of military
personnel into this area, there was
indicated the need to set up a pro
gram of service to the Jewish men
stationed in this area. The Council
responded by setting up an Armed
Services Committee and providing
the funds for doing this job, until
the program was taken over to be
financed by the USO. Again in a
cooperative relationship, the Al
liance accepted the responsibility
for supervising the social and rec
reational phases of the program for
the Jewish men in service, with the
Council taking the primary respon
sibility for the overall program.
Although, in responding to these
needs as they appear, the Council
strives to serve as a coordinating
medium, assigning responsibilities
to existing institutions, where pos
sible, such as in the case of the
Alliance, where there is no special
ized agency to do the necessary
job, the Council carries on a func
tional program. For example, there
is no specialized professional Social
Service Agency in Savannah, under
Jewish auspices. However, in a
community of our size, such needs
do appear. Such was the case with
the program of resettlement of Dis
placed Persons. In that case, the
Executive Director of the Council,
a trained Social Worker, took over
the supervision of this job, with the
aid of scores of volunteers. The
Council Director administers the
program of aid to Transients. Ne
gotiations are now going on with
the Jew-ish Home for the Aged in
Atlanta, looking to the develop
ment of a Community Support
Agreement, whereby the facilities
of the Home in Atlanta will be
made available to Savannah resi
dents, with our Council being rep
resented on the Board of Directors
of the Home. (The Support Agree
ment has already been agreed upon
by the Council and the Home
Ed.) For many years, the care of
Jewish Children in need, as well as
their families, has been carried out
and financed by the Jewish Chil
dren’s Service of Atlanta, a Region-
