Dr. Albert Schatz, 33-year-old
brilliant scientist of Fairview, N. J.,
was honored in Seattle, Wash., by
the U. S. Junior Chamber of Com
merce, as one of the 10 outstanding
young Americans of 1953.
Now professor of microbiology
and director of the research lab
oratories at the National Agricul
tural College in Pennsylvania, Dr.
Schatz was co-discoverer with No
man of the wonder drug, strepto
mycin.
An alumnus of Rutgers Univer
sity, Dr. Schatz was doing gradu
ate work at the college in 1943
when he and Dr. Waksman discov
ered streptomycin, which was born
out of soil research.
Dr. Schatz, however, had to start
legal action before he received the
recognition due him. Three years
ago, an out-of-court settlement was
reached between Dr. Schatz and Dr.
Waksman in which Dr. Schatz was
