A RABBI S VIEWPOINT
Rabbi, Dothan, Alabama
By DR. ISRAEL GERBER
Apropos of what I discussed
at our Brotherhood Service re
garding the I,ex Talionis — “the
eye for an eye, etc., “it should
he interesting to tis that in the
state of Israel, capital punish
ment is a serious issue. There is
a bill in the Kenesset, the parlia
ment, to do away with it and the
Justice Department is in full
agreement with it
In spite of Judaism being de-
scribed as a vengeful religion,
Israel, which is guided by the
so-called Old Testament, gives
the lie to those who would pro
tray Judaism as a harsh religion.
The principle of an “eye for an
eye” was never practiced literal
ly by the Jewish people. It
meant the payment of money for
the eve. And in regard to a “life
for a life,” our Ilabbis states that
any Sanhedrin, any court meted
out one death penalty in sev enty
years was a “Beth Din kationis'
— a murderous court
In a sense, does not this de
picting of Judaism as a severe
religion portray a fear on the
part of the dominant faith at
least through its spokesmen?
Whv do these men feel it neces
sary to continuously tear down

and hack away at Judaism to
prove that their religion is bet
ter? Why must they continually
stress their superiority? Psychol
ogy teaches that a person with
an inferiority complex builds his
ego by belittling or bullying the
other fellow. Is this the motivat
ing factor for the discrediting of
Judaism?
I hope not. After almost two
thousand years I would imagine
the dominant faith would have
acquired sufficient self-assur- !
ance to feel strong in its own
right without having to cast I
aspersions on another faith to
prove its greatness. I hope it
will abandon this tactic. It is un- j
becoming for a religious group
that teaches love and turning)
the other cheek to spread hatred
and to become the aggressor.
I am mighty proud of my
faith. To me it is the most hu- i
mane, the most thoughtful, kind,
considerate and understanding
of all faiths though the others
have their good points too. And
I do not have to feel this way
by throwing barbs at other faiths.
My faith does not build itself
by indulging in such a practice.
You might wonder what
makes me write this way at this
time. Well, I read where eleven
Jewish Israelis were massacred
by Jordan Arabs. I still haven’t
read where the UN has censured
the Arabs for committing this
despicable act as it did immedi
ately to Israel when the Kibiva
incident took place. Portraying
the Jew unfavorably is a favorite
trait of the non-Jewish world
(and I do not have a persecu
tion complex). I am sorry for
them that they find this practice
necessary. I am most happy to
be as our Rabbis state “of the
persecuted, than of the perse
cutors." I have a greater serenity
and calmness about myself be
cause of it than if I had to
search for opportunities to pick
on the other fellow.
