It was rarely noted and even
£ loss frequently emphasized the
fact that the Torah designates
the first eve of our Pesach-feast
as “The Eve of Vigilance” “Lei
“Shimurim.” Verily, powerfully
and strikingly does this desig
nation anticipate the solemn and
and wise forewarning of great
statesmen “that the Price of

Liberty is eternal Vigilance.”

The second great lesson of our
Pesach-Laws, not less important
and weighty than the previous |
one, is the precept “that none |
shall consume the Pesach offer- |
ing while alone but within a |
group or at least “with a neigh- |
bor near to him.” The eternal |
lesson of this commandment to |
all free people is, that true free- iLh
dom can’t he the uncontested
possession of an individual or j
even of a single peoplel If free-'
dom shall endure and resist all j
the forces allied against it, we
must share it with our fellow-
men and with other nations. If
we be satisfied with and chain-1
pion for our freedom alone and
are willing to barter away or to
sell out in some process of ap-
peasement the freedom of our
weaker brother or of weaker r: T*

liberation from the “iron fur
nace" of Egyptian bondage and
enslavement. It is that divine
love commanded to a people to j!
transform in the alchemy of its
soul and the hitter memories of
its unutterable suffering, of its
utter degradation and oppres- 1
sion — to powerful incentives to
Righteousness and good living
and to actions and deeds of love!

Ye were strangers — love there-1

The most striking expression
of genuine universal democracy
as it extends over a whole peo
ple. over all the classes and
members of a community is — to
rnv mind — the Talmudic injunc
tion “even the poorest and
humblest Jew must celebrate
the Pesach-feast with reclined
back an enjoy the four cups of
redemption from Egypt.” This
dictum of our Sages are an ever
lasting sign and symbol of the
dignity, equality and freedom
of the humblest Jew with his
more prominent brothers.
