corps headquarters before the hol
iday, arriving by truck, train and
plane for the mass seders held
in huge assembly tents. Close to
600 jammed the seder services in
the First Corps area, where GIs
lent a hand in serving and setting
the tables. Gen. Bruce C. Clarke,
Commanding General of the First
Corps, saw to the setting up of
a tent city to accommodate the
servicemen who came for three
days from the remotest sections
of First Corps. GIs on departing
for their home stations carried
back food packages containing
enough holiday foods for the week.
Last minute emergency arrange
ments by JWB for personnel of
the Sixth Fleet in the Mediter
ranean (in which Chaplain Josh
ua Goldberg, chaplain of the Third
Naval District assisted), made pos
sible services on battleships and
cruisers lying between Gibraltar
and Athens. Personnel who got
leaves found a warm welcome in
synagogues and homes in Naples,
Trieste, Athens, Gibraltar, and
Izmir, Turkey.
A Jewish naval chaplain in Nor
folk, Va., helped place JWB Pass-
over supplies on ships of the At
lantic Fleet before flying down
to the Naval Station at Guatanamo
Bay, Cuba, to conduct services.
Services were held on board six
US warships in nearby Carribean
waters and a mass seder was spon- i
sored by the Puerto Rico JWB |
Committee at the Caribe Hilton
Hotel in San Juan.
While concerned with service to
military personnel at camps near
metropolitan centers, JWB Armed
Services Committees in the U. S.
did not overlook those at such re
mote stations as Camp Irwin, Cal
if., located 50 miles from the heart
of Death Valley, and Camp Hale,
Col,, which sits on the top of a
10,000 foot mountain near Lead-
ville.
Service personnel who took part
in the “Flashburn” atomic weap
ons exercises, at Ft. Bragg, N. C.,
put a heavy strain on the small
Jewish fcommunity of Fayetteville,
which, like its sister communities
in the maneuvers area, took the
hospitality load in stride.. In the
same spirit, the Jewish commun
ity of New Brunswick, N. J., pitch- 1
ed in on short notice and pro
vided a holiday welcome for a
group of Korean returnees due on
the eve of the first seder at Camp
Kilmer, N. J.
