In what may have been the most
memorable Jewish musical event
in a long time, the world premiere
of the late composer Arnold
Schoenberg’s magnificant opera,
"Moses and Aron,” took place two
weeks ago in North Germany’s (
largest concert hall and was re
layed to audiences throughout
Europe by broadcasting networks
in three countries.
Vienna-born Schoenberg, the
foremost pioneer of atonal music, j
was 77 years old when he passed
away at Los Angeles in 1951.
Keenly interested in Jewish sub
jects, he created this compelling j
musical epic just before the blight j
of Hitlerism descended upon Ger- j
many’s cultural life. He himself
\fcrote the libretto for the entire j
work, but provided the music and 1
orchestration for two of the three I
acts only. ,
In the tone images painted by
Schoenberg and in the poetical
grandeur of the text, an intense j
drama of ideas comes alive. It is
based on the Pentateuch account,
in Exodus, of the relationship be
tween Moses and Aron.
Departing from the traditional
Jewish interpretation, Schoenberg
represents the two brothers as
protagonists of rival conceptions
of life. In the first act, the Divine
voice calls tp Moses the shepherd
from the burning bush, telling
him to lead the people of Israel
from Egyptian slavery assigning
Aron to speak to him. In the sec
ond act, Moses has remained on
Mount Sinai for 40 days. At the
foot of the mountain, the people
despair of his return and insist
that Aron make them a Golden
Calf. This he does.
The idol, to Schoenberg, is the
symbol of man’s inner thralldom,
of the Moloch of power. Before it,
orgies of voluptuous indulgence
are celebrated — until Moses re
turns and, in a frenzied rage,
smashes the Tablets of the Law.
Despondent, he then sinks to the
ground. Here Schoenberg's orches
tration ends.
After ten weeks of strenuous re
hearsal, "Moses and Aron" was
presented by the Symphony Or
chestra of the Northwest German
Radio network under the musical
direction of Hans Schmidt-Isser-
stedt. Since the extraordinarily
colorful and complex work par
takes of the oratio as well as of the
opera, three full choirs were re
quired to do justice to it. The score
runs to 400 pages, the notes for
the orchestra to 1,250. The work’s
redoubtable technical difficulties,
from which conductors shied away
for 22 years, were on the whole re
solved in a fashion that moved the
audience of 1,900 to applaud with
rapt enthusiasm.

| Plan Scoutarama
I At Grant Field
Over 13,000 Scouts will arrive
in Atlanta on May 1 to stage the
World’s Series of the Scouting
world.
“Scoutarama," as this spectacu
lar demonstration is called, has
as its theme, “Our World Tomor
row,” with all phases of the com
prehensive program planned to
demonstrate • to spectators the
things that scouting teaches, and
the part they play in helping boys
become better citizens in “Our
World Tomorrow."
In addition to the traditional
skills of scouting, such as camp
ing, Indian lore, exploring and
other outdoor events, special
events of signaling, cycling, safety,
rescue and disaster demonstra
tions will be staged. These will
dramatically highlight the import
ant part that Scouting would play
in the event of a national emer
gency.
