Bitter Herbs
The bitter herbs, horse raddish
or any other bitter vegetable, is
eaten as a symbol of the suffering
of the Hebrews at the hands of the
J Egyptians who made their life
bitter with hard labor.
Shank
A roasted bone symbolizing the
L! Paschal lamb which was eaten in
* the Temple period. A roasted egg
J I is placed with it to commemorate
> the special sacrifice the “Hagigah,"
V | offered in addition to the Paschal
£ lamb.
£ Haroseth
A compound of nuts, apples and
cinnamon minced into a paste with
wine. It resembles the color of
clay and is symbolic of the clay of
which the Hebrews made the
bricks while in Egypt. The bitter
herb is dipped in this Haroseth.
Dessert Afflkomen
The half of the middle matzo,
which early in the evening is laid
aside under the pillow, is broken
and handed around to be eaten as
the last morsel of the Seder Feast.

An idol worshipper once asked
Rabbi Joshua Ben Korcha, "Why
did God speak to Moses out of the
thorn-bush?”
The rabbi replied, “If the Lord
had spoken out of a carob-tree or
sycamore tree, thou wouldst have
asked the same question. But it is
not proper to dismiss thee without
some answer. Why then was it a
thorn-bush? ^To teach thee that
there is no spot in which the pres
ence of God is not to be found,
even though it be a thorn-bush-
