House of Peace Has New Rabbi
Dr. Marcus Wald, Ph.-D., Rab
bi of Temple Israel of Sharon
(Boston), Mass., has accepted the
call from the House of Peace con
gregation In Columbia to become
its spiritual head and Rabbi.
Rabbi Morton Gordon, who pre
ceded Rabbi Wald, left Columbia |
early in the spring to return to
his home in Connecticut.
Rabbi Wald had served his con
gregation in Sharon and Jewish
and non-Jewish organizations in
Boston for the last five years.
-Previously he had served as Rabbi
of the Hampstead Hebrew Con
gregation in London, England,
and the East London Hebrew Con
gregation in South Africa.
He was an R. A. F. chaplain in
North Africa during World War
II. In 1947, in recognition of his
came to this country in 1899. She
was a member of the House of
Peace Synagogue and of the
Daughters of Israel.

burial services
Survivors include her husband,
Rabbi Karesh; four sons, Coleman
Karesh of Columbia, . Joseph
Karesh, Jacob Karesh and Abe
Karesh, all of San Francisco; one
daughter, Mrs. Minnie Bloom of
Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Wil
liam Schenkman and Mrs. Aaron
Berke of New York; six grand
children and a number of nieces
and nephews.

Mrs. Lena Mishkoff Karesh, 74,
wife of Rabbi David Karesh of
Columbia, died last week at her
home following a long Illness.
An overflow crowd of friends
and relatives were present at her
funeral to pay their last respects
to Mrs. Karesh.
A resident of Columbia for the
past 46 years, Mrs. Karesh was
born in Grayevo, Poland, and

Stanley Donen, a Columbia
young man who got his theatrical
start here in his home city and
who has danced on Broadway, is
the director of a current Holly
wood hit which is playing in Co
lumbia theaters.
Mr. Donen is director of the
picture, “Seven Brides for Seven
Brothers.” The State newspaper
the largest dally paper in South
Carolina, last week carried an
editorial complimenting Stanley
Donen as a Columbia boy who
made good in the movies in a big
way.

COULMBUS — Charles Kolod-
kin, 52, formerly of Atlanta, died
August 15. Funeral services were
held August 16 in Columbus. --

SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
Rabbi Julius A. Leibert, an Army
chaplain in two World Wars, has
been appointed chaplain for San
Quentin Prison, it was announced
last week. He succeeds Dr. Ru
dolph I. Coffee, whose activities
as chaplain of state prisons over
many years won considerable at
tention throughout the country.
Rabbi Leibert was recommended
for the appointment by the Board
of Rabbis of Northern California.
A graduate of Hebrew Union Col
lege in 1916, he ocupied pulpits in
many parts of the country. He was
a chaplain with the U. S. Army in
World War I and again in World
War II when he held the rank of
lieutenant colonel.
A Savannahian who has studied
in Israel and Syria and visited
there and the Arab states several
times since World War II believes
the Arabs could benefit from a
study of the successful Democratic
government in Israel.
Speaking before members of the
Lions Club, Michael Adilman, C.
P. A. and an attorney here, said
a realization of democracy and
improving economic conditions in
neighboring Israel “is one of the
major causes of unrest and in
stability in the Arab States as the
peoples are awakening and de
manding a better way of life.”
T. David Cooper, son of Mr. and
Mrs. I. H. Cooper .received a
check and an award certificate
from Maj. Gen. Arthur W. Pence,
commanding general of the En
gineer Center, Fort Belvoir, Va.,
for a suggestion which will save
the Army hundreds of dollars a
year. An electrical engineer at the
Corps of Engineers’ Research and
Development Laboratories, Mr.
Cooper suggested that the “Kelvin”
bridge be used as an improved
method of measuring temperature
rises in the stators or rotating
electrical machinery.
