CONSCIENCE OF A COMMUNITY CHEST
. What a splendid example of cooperation and goodwill the
Atlanta Community Chest demonstrated in its campaign opener!
File date had been originally set for Tuesday. Invitations had
gOne out and National Community Chest Campaign Chairman
Firestone accepted the place of principal speaker.
Then it was discovered that Tuesday fell on the first dav of
Rosh Hashonah.
Without equivocation, there began a series of back-stage
turn-abouts which leaves us rather awed with admiration for the
respect the maneuvers indicate for Judaism, for our part in the
community schema and for consideration of A. L. Feldman, one oi
the general co-chairmen this year, and the other Jewish workers
whose religious integrity would have been challenged by the hold
ing of the event on this Highest of Jewish High Holy Days.
Arrangements for the gigantic breakfast were completely re
shuffled. Invitations and notifications to the couple of thousand
of business presidents invited were put into reverse and corrected.
Nationally, Mr. Firestone cancelled a personal appearance Sunday
with Vice President Ntyon on a national radio and TV' hookup to
make his Atlanta date. Instead he recorded his remarks in advance
and cancelled his Monday appointments to he in Atlanta twentv-
fotfr hours earliei.
The event indicates to us more than ever the communal in-
tegrit yof the Community Chest, its spirit of cooperation and
recognition of deep and intrensic values not only in the programs
of the thirty-three agencies it supports but in- its own methods for
GREE TINGS FROM
securing its funds.
Such an organization merits our full backing for it truly re
flects the heartbeat of a community in action to meet a common
need.
HOW MANY OTHERS LIKE CRASANOW?
From Washington comes the timely word that Abraham
Crasanow discharged as a security risk by the Navy has been ex-
honorated and that it was all a mistake anyway.
Justice to this individual is the least that can he done and it
is high time that changes be made in procedure in the Navv loyalty
program which permitted such a miscarriage of decency and justice.
Abraham CrasanAw will not be able to recover completely
from the woes and travail of the past months in which he fought
to be reinstated to the job in which he had served for 22 years
are intangibles that the turn of events cannot erase.
His case is a sad commentary of the hysteria into which cer
tain aspects of our civil rights have been permitted to drift.
As American Jewry observes its Three Hundredth Birthday
in this nation, we may all pause and reflect bow the freedom we
enjoy and the responsibilities we share have been of late perverted
by national hysteria which so easily can create victims like Crasa
now. A victim of heresay and Boundless rumors, Crasanow has be
latedly been exhonorated. flow many others like him are innocent
victims of the same procedures?
