Another Year or A New Year
By l)K. ISRAEL J. GERBER
RABBI, TEMPLE EMANl-EL, DOTHAN. ALA.
According to ancient tradition, Rosh Hashonoh is the birth
day of the world, the day on which the world was created. We
regularly commemorate this event by solemnly and prayerfully
greeting its advent, and by wiehing our relatives and friends a
“Happy New Year.”
It is essential that we thoughtfully ponder the words “New
Year.” We do not welcome another year, but a New Year. This
is significant for it points to a very important fact that we ought
not to overlook.
We read in the Talmud that when the angels asked the Lord
when Rosh Hashonoh would arrive, He replied, “Do not inquire
of Me, but of mankind.” This legend, I believe, conveys a soul-
searching teaching to all of us.
Whether the year 5715 shall be just another year or a New
Year depends wholly on each of us—on what we intend to do with
it. Shall it be a year of profound dedication to the essentials of
our faith or of catering to our selfish desires? Shall it be a year
of service to mankind or one of disservice? Shall it be a year of
growth toward maturity or a year of infantile behavior? On how
we answer these and similar questions lies the answer whether it
will he just another year or a New Year.
The alternatives are plainly marked. At this season we pass in
review before us our conduct of the preceding year. We determine
to retain our good qualities and to cast away our weaknesses and
to replace them with sturdier characteristics. By making the cor
rect choices and performing the correct deeds can we make the
next year a true New Year in the deepest sense of the term.
May we all he remembered unto life by God who delightest
in life.
