When the Anti-Mask Law was introduced in the Legislature back in 1952, he became intensely interested in it. He made a special trip to Atlanta and stayed around the Legislative Hall doing everything he could to get this bill on the statute books of Georgia. He recounted that he had met Mai vin Griffin, at that time Lieutenant Governor of Georgia, a few weeks previously at a barbe cue, and they had gotten pretty well acquainted. '1 asked him, if he would help get this Bill passed, Dick said. "He assured me he would pledge his suppoit to get it through the Senate, but that with out support of Governor Herman Talrnadge in tne House, if would not pass. Well, d passed the Sen ate wit -1 a vote of 37 to nothing, as expected but was yet to be put lo a vote in the House. Ag am. He told the Governor he hoped he would come out in fa- v n of t .is Bill which was definite ly opposed to lawlessness in Geor gia. The Governor was aware that there had been a terrific amount of unfavorable publicity nationally. Dick related, specifically concern ing Florida and South Carolina where lawlessness had been most frequent. In January, following, that Christinas Day visit, he went to Atlanta as the Governor had suggested he should. “When 1 walked in his office, the Governor said, 'Die';, I know what you arc hcie for. At present, Dick’s first love — if we may call it that — seems to be the future success of the Geor gia Citizens Council. He says he particularly enjoys the close friend ship of Jo. n W. Maloof, Director of the Council, and says it is a plea sure to work with him, as well as the Staft and other board members. Although entitled to travel expense in connection with his Council membership duties, he has made several tiips out of State on Coun cil business at his own expense.
