Uranium in Israel
(Continued from page 5)
New York, for at once the scientists
were besieged by newsmen, and
the papers were full of vague in
formation, long-forgotten and re
vived statements. Scientists are a
queer species and never like to talk
about their work.
Thus, Professor Ernest Bergman,
man of the Atomic Energy Commis
sion, stepped in with an explana
tory radio statement which was to
do away with all the guesswork
and for the moment — put an
end to all the discussion. Yes, he
said, uranium ore has been found
and a quantity has been extracted
out of phosphates . . . and yes,
there is a good chance that Israel
will produce uranium on an in
dustrial scale . . . and yes, research
is being done at the VVeizmann In
stitute m the field of cosmic rays
as alternative and cheaper means
of investigation and training of nu-
lear physicists than the terribly ex
pensive establishment of giant cy
clotrons or atomic piles oi reactors
The Hebrew University and the
Haifa Technion, Professor Berg
man said, are cooperating in many
research fields.

Of course, the question now be
ing asked everywhere is: when will
atomic energy produced right in Is
rael, replace electric power'.’ And
when it does, what possibilities will
it open up'.’ People have already
been talking of irrigation networks
driven by cheap atomic energy; of
installations that will extract the
salt content from sea water (by
atomic energy) and thus release
unlimited quantities of cheap wat
er: of how much less fuel oil Israel
will have to import — if in the
meantime companies now drilling
for oil won’t find any when at
omic energy is substituted? But
these dreamers are getting a lot
of cold showers. Many many years
will yet have to pass, even with the
UN's approval of President Eisen
hower s "Atoms for Peace" project,
before such dreams may become
feasible.
But they can right be proud of
the conrtibution which Israeli sci
entists are making in the field of
nuclear research. That was what
the late President Weizmann had
always striven for; scientific prog
ress. he insisted, does not depend
on the size of a country, hence,
even the smallest state can become
important if it excels in the field
of science. In his mind's eve he
had always seen Israel as an ex
porter of her scientific discoveries.
He died two years ago. The Iso
tope Department of his center of
scientific research and development
began its experiments long before
then. Maybe he died knowing that
Israel was well on the way to mak
ing a significant contribution to the
progress in nuclear physics?
