This was in the summer of 1949, and a telephone call chang ed his course. He was engaged as one of a duo-piano team being us ed as background and support for a long tour of Gian Carlos Me- notti's famous Broadway produc tions “The Medium” and “The Tel ephone.” During that same season, he was engaged as soloist with Paul Whitman conducting an all-Gersh win concert. At that time, he started doing quit a bit of accom panying for singers, and in the en suing years accompanied such out standing artists as Lawrence Win ters of the New York City Center Opera Company; Jerome Hines, Martha I.ipton, Bryan Sullivan, Flank Guarrea (all from the Met ropolitan < tpera Co.) In 1950 he was engaged as Mu sical Director for Kurt Weill's “Knickerbocker Holiday" starring Burl Ives. This show in particular gave Sherman the incentive to com bine the Musical Production phase of show business with his other classical endeavors. < >n July 26, 1956, he was invited to appear as guest soloist with the National Symphony in Washington, I). C.. for the Sesquicentenni.nl Celebra tion in a Gershwin Memorial Con ceit as part of the famous Water gate Series. From then', Sherman Frank wa< engaged as piano soloist perform ing the Grieg Concerto on tour in the Song of Nonva) m 195u. Pro duction Director of the company uf the Song of Norway, Robert Jarvis, m the summer of 1951 persuaded him to come into the field of sum mer operetta as an assistant con ductor for the I.ambcrtville Music Circus in New Jersey, which pre sented Annie Get Your Gun. Car men Jones, Naughty Marietta and many other hits. (He got practical experience in the field as a pianist for the Radio City Music Hall Pro ductions in New York Cityi. Dur ing the performances which he con ducted at I.ambertville, the most important agent and manager in the field of summer operettas . . . Hen ry Wless . . . saw Sherman con duct. and was responsible for his rapid rise to success. hollowing a season at Lambert- ville, Mr. Frank was engaged as associate Musical Director for the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, Mo., which presented among other outstanding musicals the Vagabond King, Showboat and Carousel. He remained there during the 1952, 1953 and 1954 seasons. During these years, he became Musical Di rector for the elaborate annual mu sical spectaculars of the Oldsmo- bile and Cadillac Divisions of Gen- eial Motors. These are termed In dustrial shows, which have helped immeasurably to stimulate sales and create good will within the au tomotive industry, and at the same time to create tremendous oppor tunities for Show Business people.
