Everybody Can I .earn to Paint.”
Such is the name of a recently is
sued painting manuel.
It seems that painting is some
thing like the Presidency of the
United States. Everybody can he
President in America. According ot
the Constitution, the chief require
ment is that you he horn in the
country. There is another slight
qualification. You have to get
about 30,000,1)00 people to vote for
you
Mr. Eisenhower is both a painter
and a President.
But to he a good painter or a
good President - that is something
different.
The famous German Jewish art
ist. Max Lieberman, was painting
the portiait of a physician, who
finally grew weary of the numer
ous sittings which Lieberman de
manded of him.
"The picture, as you have paint
ed it, is already good; why do you
ask me to sit more?” demanded
the physician.
"I’ll tell you," replied Lieber
man. "The difference between a
doctor and an artist is this. The
doctor buries his mistakes. The
painter's mistakes hang on a wall.
Now you know why 1 must work
more at it."
Lieberman, by the way, was one
painter who was as renowned for
his wit as for his artistry. Once
he was told that there was another
painter in Berlin who was going
about bragging that he was respon
sible for much of the best work of
Lieberman. "Why don't you take
some action against this man?”
Lieberman’s friends asked.
Lieberman replied that he didn’t
care il this other artist claimed cre
dit for his work. “But,” added Lie
berman, "if he ever says that I
helped him in any of his own paint
ings, I'll act quickly enough."
There has been a tremendous
outpouring of Sunday painters of
late. Mr. Churchill paints. Eisen
hower paints. Truman doesn’t
paint, but he plays the piano. What
does it all mean?
Is it perhaps that men, looking
at the problems of the world, turn
away from the many cosmic per
plexities and find some peace in
painting a 1 illy growing lazily in
the back yard, or a run-down barn
badly in need of repairs?
The great Jewish mystic, the
Baal Shem Tov, insisted that there
was divinity in everything, that
even in what men call evil there is
good.
The painter in a sense confirms
this view. He finds moving beau
ty in the tired faces of men and
women, in the stones on the road,
in the neglected farm house, in the
tenement squalor. He is not con
scious of it, but he is a great relig
ious force. The painter who
searches out and reveals this om
nipresent beauty is, to my mind,
more of a religious and spiritual
force than many a preacher.
