Small Town Dilemma
finds himself in almost the same
position of the small-town girl

young man to appear. Rabbi

Families which live in small
towns are usually faced with the
problem of finding suitable mar
riage partners for their children.
The problem is always twofold.
One is to find the right person
and the other to find someone
who is Jewish.
In many instances, the solution
to this vital issue is never found.
The families are usually in
tegrated with one another and the
children grow up as “pals.” The
college break and the G. I. in
vasion are a most welcome in
terlude for many girls who feel
that they would like to look
around before saying "Yes” to a
next-door neighbor whom they
have known since childhood. The
more adventurous type of girls
are inclined to visit the large
cities in the hope of enticing a
nice young man to marry them
and settle down to a rural life.
The same cannot be said of the
unfortunate stay-at-homes, who
because of family problems or
business reasons, have given up
to spinsterhood, or in the case of
a man, to batcherlorhood. In this
instance it is tragic, because the
“right one" hasn’t come along.
Rabbi Jacob Roth is a spirited
and active young man who has
become fully acquainted with this
problem. Three years ago he org
anized The American Jewish
Friendship Club. It is not a Shod-
chan bureau in any sense. The
real purpose of Rabbi Roth’s en
terprise is to create an instrument
for Jews all over the world thr
ough which one could contact an
other by writing. But Rabbi Roth
has injected the spirit of Judaism
as the common denominator for
the correspondents. And since
there is an exchange between
men and women, a number of
successful marriages have ensued.
Rabbi Roth is very proud of this.
He is particuarly proud of the
fact that his own marriage even
tuated under similar circum
stances. He himself had corres
ponded for six months with a girl
from a small Ohioan town prior to
his marriage. Rabbi Roth is a
New Yorker,

To become a member of the
Club one must be single and Jew
ish, of course. Each month a
coded individualized list is sent
out to members. All the names,
addresses, ages and likes of each
member is given. One list goes
to women; the other to men. A
of like character.

doesn’t take any fee when he per
