PEOPLE
Leonard Lyons of the N. Y.
Post reports: Herman Wouk, au
thor of “The Caine Mutiny,” is
a devoutly religious man, who re
cites morning and evening pray
ers and eats only kosher food.
Last week he went to Maryland
to attend a meeting of the gov
ernors of the American-Israel So
ciety. Gov. McKeldin of Mary
land, who is an official of the So
ciety, was host to the group. The
meeting was held aboard the for
mer Presidential Yacht, the Po
tomac. Just before dinner was
served aboard the yacht, Gov.
McKeldin assured Wouk: “Be
cause of you, I’ve arranged for
the dinner to be kosher.”
Bernard M. Baruch, friend of
Presidents, last week slipped into
the White House for a chat with
President Eisenhower. The Ba-
ruch-Eisenhower pre-Big Four
discussion remains a secret.
Peter Grippe, lecturer in the
Fine Arts at Brandies University,
has been selected to submit a mo
del for a piece of sculpture to be
placed in front of the UN’s Gen
eral Assembly Building. Mr. Le-
loup, Director of FAO’s Forestry
Division, returning from a visit
to Israel where he was able to
see all the forestry work being
done in the country, reported to*
FAO headquarters in Rome that
“in his opinion, Israel may well
provide an important center for
training of other countries in such
work.” The most striking feature
in the development of the coun
try, according to Mr. Leloup, was
the completeness of the unit set
tlement. The creation of a new
village and village lands has gone
hand in hand with that of a road
side, windbreak and firewood and
pole plantations, his report indic
ated.
Rabbi Ariel L. Goldberg of
