Poll Shows Majority
of Britons Like Jews
LONDON, (JTA) — Twelve
percent of all people who re
plied to a poll of readers of the
Daily Herald, the Labor Party
newspaper in this country, are
prejudiced against Jews, the
newspaper disclosed this week
end. The poll was undertaken
after the news broke of a col
lege in Cambridge considering
whether to accept or reject a be
quest tied to anti-Semitic and
anti-Negro conditions.
The poll also found that more
than half—52 percent—of the
readers liked all Jews. Replying
to another query, more than half
of the Daily Herald’s readers said
that they would approve of their
children marrying Jews.

REPRINTED FROM THE INTERMOUNTAIN
JEWISH NEWS OF DENVER, COLORADO
“From Biblical times, the Jewish
religion has recognized the val
idity of divorce when it offered
the only alternative to a mar
riage which had lost its power to
create happiness or reflect holi
ness,” Rabbi Abraham L. Fein-
berg of Holy Blossom Temple of
Toronto, told the annual national
meeting of the Divorce Reform
Association in Toronto. Excerpts
from Rabbi Feinberg’s address
Continue:
Once a marital relationship be
comes hopeless and irretrievable,
Judaism believes that it may be
severed, with complete remarriage
freedom of both pa^rties. At
least, the fact of a divorce in it
self did not interpose an obstacle
to h further attempt at marital
success.
Judaism defines marriage not
as a sacrament in the absolute
theological sense, but as a coven
ant between two persons dedicat
ed to the highest ideals of Jew
ish life, as ordained by God. The
contracting parties being human,
they are capable of mistakes in
judgment and weakness of char
acter.
Human Fulfillment
Since Judaism does not believe
that men and women must suffer
torment and misery throughout
their earthly lives because of a
condition which can be corrected
and regards not only procreation,
but also human fulfillment and
joy, as a legitimate, God-sanc
tioned purpose of marital union,
it therefore permits divorce —
when and after every possible ef
fort has been made to re-establish
the broken home and reconcile
the husband and wife. Particu
larly if children are involved, di
vorce can come only as a desper
ate last resort. Yet a divided
house occasionally breeds such

hostility that the offspring may
be nurtured more constructively
by one parent, rather than by a
tug-of-war.
The rabbis of the Talmud were
surely not advocates of loose mar
ital bonds, as I shall show! On the
contrary, they shaped the family
into an instrument, as important
as the synagogue itself, for the
preservation of the Jewish relig
ion. But the Jewish sages were
intensely human and "humane.
They had profound understand
ing of the nature of marriage. To
them, marriage involved not only-
religion and ethics, but also the
facts of human psychology. They
had penetrated to the insight that
if a man was prepared to sever
his marriage for a trivial reason,
then the real grounds lay deeper
than the reason assigned.
The old Hebrew wise men, far
from underestimating the resis
tance to divorce, were simply try
ing to emphasize this basic truth;
that when there is no harmony
between husband and wife, when
love and understanding have fled,
the marriage has ceased to exist
and the bond has already been
dissolved in the eyes of God. Un
der such circumstances, the legal
divorce simply puts an end to a
spiritually destructive and cor
rupting situation.
In rabbinic literature it is said
that the altar of God sheds tears
over a man who divorces the wife
of his youth. That beautiful sen
tence expresses in symbolic
terms the deep-seated aversion
of Jews, as human beings to di
vorce. Jewish leaders underscor
ed the fact that conditions often
require a husband and wife to
adjust themselves, at great sac
rifice of personal happiness, in
order to maintain a home for the
children. Furthermore, easy di
vorce would disrupt many fam
ilies which might have been kept
intact after a long trial and more
patience; the wounds can often
be healed.
Complex Problem
In other words, Judaism places
one primary consideration at the
center of the whole complex prob
lem of marriage: namely, the
well-being of the persons involv
ed. What is best for them, es
pecially for the innocent off
spring?
Up to recent times divorce was
a rarity in Jewish life, almost ne
gligible, even though the teach
ing allowed it. Due to greater
freedom and independence, espe
cially for women, breakdown of
religious authority, environmen
tal influence, concentration of
cities, materialism and the conse
quent decay of family responsi
bility, the divorce rate among
Jews has greatly increased. Yet
it still falls far below the average.
Despite the growing incidence
of divorce and true to its basic
spirit, Judaism honestly and
forthrightly admits that in spite
of all effort, some marriages lack
the love, the care, the mutual
sympathy which gave them sanc
tity; therefore they are best dis-
olved. To punish the partners in
a tormenting marriage, to deny
them another opportunity for ful
fillment with more suitable mates
would be inconceivable within
Judaism.
