Flouting of civil liberties in the Shubow of Boston expresses great
United States at an alarming rate
was disclosed last week by Dr.
Robert M. Hutchins, president of
the Fund for the Republic, a
Ford Foundation enterprise. “Al
though in some particulars the at
mosphere is better than it was
five years ago, the misunder
standing of civil liberties, the in
difference to them, and the viola
tions of them, are still such as
to give cause for alarm,” Dr.
Hutchins reported.
A semi-confidential “First Na
tional Directory of ‘Rightist’
Groups, Publications and Some
Individuals,” containing the names
of some 500 ‘Rightist’ organiza
tions and anti-Semitic propagan
da machines, has made its ap
pearance on the West Coast. The
publication is sponsored by Lib
erty and Property, a San Fran
cisco agency headed by Willis A.

Lewis I. Strauss, Chairman of
the Atomic Energy Commission,
returning from the Geneva Con
ference on the Peaceful Use of
Atomic Energy, reported that the
United States is "clearly ahead”
of the Soviet Union in develop
ment of atomic power.
The current issue of the anti-
Semitic publication, “Destiny,”
published in Haverhill, Mass.,
carries an article highly prais
ing Lessing J. Rosenwald. “We
are indebted to Mr. Rosenwald,”
the article states, “for pointing
out some distinctions ‘(Jews Ar
abs and Zionism’) which are not
clear to non-Jews generally.”

Parley in Columbus
COLUMBUS — National JWV
Commander Joseph Barr will be
the principal speaker here during
the Labor Day convention of the
Georgia Department, Jewish War
Veterans.
The Columbus Post of the JWB
and the local community will join
in welcoming the national com
mander and guests expected for
concern over the split in Ameri
can Zionist ranks. “It seems in
credible,” he says, “that now at
a time of our greatest triumph
and the complete vindication of
the Zionist Ideology, we should
be concerned with a possible
cleavage in our ranks and«dis-
sention in our historic Move
ment.”
The American Jewish Congress,
through Will Maslow, its general
counsel, has ufged the Senate
Post Office and Civil Service
Committee to scrap the present
Federal Employees Security Pro
gram and formulate a new one.
Mr. Maslow charged that the
present program invited the “op
eration of bigotry and incompe
tence.”
John Foster Dulles’ new three-
point proposal in solving the Mid
dle East dilemma has aroused a
curious interest in Israel. Most
Israelis do no believe the Arab
States will accept it.
A series of rapidly moving
events focused the attention of
the world and diplomatic circles
this past week on Israel and the
Middle East.
U. S. Secretary of State John
Foster Dulles issued a statement
offering to guarantee the Israel-
Arab borders in conjunction with
a loan for compensation of Arab
refugees. This proposal was be
ing studied by the Israel cab
inet.
Before the speculation stirred
up by the proposal could congeal,
additional hostilities broke out in
the Gaza strip, with several lives
lost on both sides. A plane flight
was reported involving jets from
both sides.
Meanwhile, the situation in Mo
rocco became even more tense
with reports of additional beat
ings, slaying, pilaging and other
examples of mob action and
counter-action leaving the coun
try in a turmoil. The Jewish
citizens were caught in the mid-

the Labor Day weekend.
A tnumber of social events have
been planned, including a ban
quet at which Barr will speak, at
the Standard Club. The Ralston
Hotel will be the convention ho
tel. The Standard Club will be
the scene of several entertain
ments.
Delegates are expected from
Valdosta, Savannah, Atlanta, Ma
con and Charleston and other cit
ies of Georgia, as well as visitors
from Birmingham.
My Mother always said that she
was prepared to learn even from
a child. I hope that the organ
izers of collection propaganda in
America have
as much open-
minded intelli
gence as my
nice Yiddishe
mother. If so,
there is a great
deal they could
learn from the
seven young
sters who vis
ited Israel re
cently on the second annual tour
sponsored by Camp Blue Star of
Hendersonville, N. C.
There were two 14-year-olds
in the group — Stephen Chanin
of Macon, and Stephen Zager, of
Greensboro, N. C. The rest
were from 18 to 23, and included
Arlene Greenberg, Jeanne Rosen
berg and Beverly Stein of Atlanta.
“The way funds are collected
in America is not fair to us,”
they declraed with an innocent
honesty which reminds me of the
story of the Emperor and his new
clothes!
Every right-minded person in
Israel has been writhing over the
tear-jerking propaganda for
years. If Dr. Stein, the Haifa
representative of Globe Travel
Agency, and I hadn’t been laugh
ing so hard, we would have tak
en each one of those youngsters
in our arms and given them a
good hug.
What were they so indignant
about? They were completely
taken aback to find that Israel
was an exciting country, packed
with interesting things to see and
do; with stimulating things to
think about; and with people who
took them to their hearts like
long-awaited children. Every
one seemed to want to give them
something, which touched them
to the core. They had thought
that all Israelis want is to get
something from Americans, if it’s
only a bundle of old clothes.
I just fell in love with these
youngsters, because there is noth
ing I value more than a lively
mind, no matter the age of the
person who possesses it. Without
snobbishness or reserve, they had
gone right to the heart of the
people, appreciating the values
each represented no matter what
their social status was.
They talked of their contacts
die and as usual squeezed from
both sides. The possibility of re
moving the unfortunate Jewish
population to Israel was discussed
in diplomatic circles.
A report • Wednesday said
Egypt had accepted a U. N. pro
posal about the Gaza tension.
This after the breakdown of the
talks on the subject confounded
observers. Israel was expected
to follow suit.
First Atlanta Jewish Teachers
Conference September 11,12,13
with guides and hotel keepers
with no less admiration than they
told of their visit to Rachel Ben
Zvi, Israel’s First Lady, and to
Dr. Lehman, the great scholar
and humanitarian of Ben Shem-
en. With unusual intelligence and
soundness of instinct, they seem
ed to have grasped the secret of
Israel’s democracy: that all Jews
are brothers. They more than
grasped it. They felt part of it.
The misconceptions under which
they were laboring, which made
a trip to Israel seem as glamor
ous as a visit to an Old Folks’
Home, are only one aspect of the
matter.
Even more important and wor
thy of study are the reactions of
the young people to Israel. They
reacted like warm-hearted, sin
cere Jewish children. Demon
strating that there is a Jewish
youth in America, and a remark
ably fine and intelligent youth,
as I have seen. Perhaps it’s just
because they are so intelligent and
sincere and discriminating that
they find the unleavened bread
of community interests, and a
formalized religious observance
unpalatable.
Israel, with its full-flavoured,
fermenting realities has every
thing in it that is necessary for
nourishing a healthy Jewish
youth, whether in America or
elsewhere. This is not easy to
convey through official channels,
whatever organization is repre
sented. The interests of the or
ganization must always be the
primary concern, and no single
ogranization, or even group of or-
gaizations, is Israel.
The problem is, how to pro
vide for those very nice, intelli
gent and fundamentally respon
sive young people, an atmosphere
which is activated with the essen
tials of Zionism, the realities of
Israel.
Or, more simply, as my Mother
would put it, "Vee bringt men
der katz ibber der vasser?”. This,
actually points to the real core
of the matter. And in this re
spect, it seems to me that Her
man and Harry Popkin have ar
rived at a brilHantly simple solu
tion. Not only the young people
of the American Jewish commu
nities, but Zionism as a whole
stands to benefit immeasurably by
these tours.

Ku Klux Klan
Leader Attacks
ADL as Evil
CONWAY, S. C. (JTA — The
robed and hooded leader of the
Ku Klux Klan on August 21 stat
ed that his organization was form
ed to “fight the evils against the
white man” among which are
Negro, Christian and Jewish or
ganizations.
E. L. Edwards of Atlanta, Ga.,
addressing a crowd estimated at
1,500 in an open field about eight
miles from Conway, listed the Na
tional Association for the Ad
vancement of Colored People,
Knights of Columbus, and the
B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation
League as groups which bring on
evil.
Edwards, who claims to be im
perial wizard of the new “U. S.
Klan, Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan,” said he wants to make his
organization “strong and vicious”
enough to fight off these “evils.”
He said liis organization will re
main within the law, but, he
shouted, “this is a white man’s
organization fighting for white
supremacy.”
