Ten Days of Repentance.
There is this, too, to be said.
Despite the great personal re
sponsibility involved in the
searching of self that this holy
season confers upon us, there is
no possibility for us to be puffed
up in pride at the great individu
ality inherent in these thoughts.
The responsibility is too great
for such thoughts. Neither the
Day of Remembrance nor the
Day of Judgment permit of such
interpretations.
Nor is it, paradoxically, a time
for divorce from the great collec
tive that is the Jewish people,
past and present. The emphasis
on the personal summing up is no
invitation for every man to set
his hand against his neighbor.
On the contrary, it is exactly in
that realm to trespasses that we
are adjured to be most meticul
ous. It is in this category of sins,
the sins that we commit all too
easily against our fellow men,
that we must search most deeply.
Yet, on this Holy Day, we are
almost as cut off from the cus
toms of the peoples of the world,
as are the Druzes. The very fact
that it is a Holy Day, and not a
holiday, is proof of that. We cele
brate only our wise and holy men
on these days, not the mere fact
that there has been a change in
the calendar. It is not a time for
backslapping, though it is time
for best wishes. It is not time
for riotous behavior, but rather
for sobriety.
Above all, it would seem that
no time of our year bears better
witness to our status as a people
of learning than this Rosh Has-
honah. This is the time for us to
know ourselves, to be true to our
best selves. And this we cannot
which we can measure ourselves
that has been laid down over
do without that standard against
the centuries.
No one of us can be so pre
sumptuous as to imagine that he
could give himself a “clean bill
of health,” simply on the grounds
that some internal process made
him “feel okay.” Judaism re
quired is a knowledge of the
standards, a kind of spiritual
Bureau of Weights and Measures.
Nobody puts his thumb on these
scales.
Rosh Hashonah is the time for
the totaling up of our accounts.
And because we are all presumed
to be “Knowers” the accounting
system is not changed from one
year to the next. And even if we
change in all other things, if the
“natural” shoulder has replaced
the padded one, that means
nothing. The shape of the soul,
the knowledge of what is re
quired of us in our duty to God
and man, resists all dictates of
fashion. The commandment to
love the Lord, our God, with all
our heart, will not be more nor
less imperative for any shift of
geography or citizenship, nor any
of the works of man.
Because of this grand differ
ence in our system of belief, then,
we can say with pride, not
“Happy New Year” but “May
you be inscribed for a good year.”
Which you by ancient precept,
and secure in that knowledge,
may you measure up to that re
quirement” It means, above all
things, that you should measure
“up, not to some idea of happi
ness,” which is an invention of
man for man, but to some stand
ard of knowledge, which is God’s
duty imposed on man. Not for a
burden, but for his true glory.
Best Wishes
to One and All
