What Happened In Israel Next Year
(Letter from Israel)
By BEN DAVID
What happened next year in
Israel?
Crazy, you say, to write an ar
ticle about what happened next
year?
Maybe, but Edward Bellamy,
author of the famous “Looking
Backward” once wrote a fan
tasy about the inhabitants of
Mars, whom he depicted as being
able to see the future.
An inhabitant of Mars would
be able to write such an article,
but not a denizen of this planet.
However, I have a friend on
Mars who has sent me some notes
and here are some of the things
he foresees.
First of all, since the cold war
had abated, negotiations were be
gun by Israel with the Soviet to
permit Jews to go to Israel. As
a result, 2,000,000 Jews took the
train from Moscow to Tel Aviv
and the porters on the trains
made a fortune selling pillows
and hot chocolate to the passen
gers. Israel was forced immedi
ately to begin the rationing of
borscht. Fortunately the immi
grants brought along their own
vodka or there would not have
been enough wine for kiddush.
The large flow of Russians even
caused the weather to change and
a heavy snow fell in the Negeb.
The favorite song of the Negeb
came in to be that old reliable,
“Auf dem Pripichock.”
Fortunately several of the Jews
working in the copper mines of
the Negeb had once been in the
garment business. They immedi
ately began the manufacture of
overcoats. As buttons were need
ed for the overcoats, it was
found that the Negeb sands were
ideal for this purpose. The Re
publican and Democratic parties
both placed orders for Israeli
buttons for 1956.
The next great thing that hap
pened in Israel next year was
the finding of oil. So much oil
was found that the people be
gan calling the country Isra-oil.
Everybody put on a ten gallon
hat and Hebrew began to be
spoken in a southern accent, like
Texas. “Shalom you all,” be
came a common expression in
Beersheba.
Something even greater hap
pened. Israel began to bottle sun
shine and export it to the world.
You wouldn’t need coal or gas.
A can of sunshine will provide
fuel and power. This came about
as the result of an invention by
an Israeli scientist.
All this is crazy, you say.
Well, some is. Let’s take up
particulars.
About the emigration from
Russia, well, now that the cold
war seems on the disminishing
side, that is at least a remote
possibility.
About the oil. The recent spurt
of flaming gas at Gan Yavne
was very encouraging. There
have been such evidences in
other drillings in Israel, but
never before in such quantities.
About the sunshine. It is a fact
that an Israeli scientist, H. Tabor
has achieved remarkable results
in the development of a solar
engine. The use of the sun’s en
ergy for the heating of water and
for minor domestic purposes is
not a new thing. But not enough
of the sun’s energy' has been suc
cessfully captured by any of the
common practices to make it use
ful for industrial purposes. The
problem has been not so much
capturing the sun energy as
keeping it from being quickly
dissipated. The Tabor process
offers great hope in this con
nection. The process will be tried
during the coming year at the
potash works around Sodom, be
ing developed with the aid of
the State of Israel Bonds.
Israeli scientists are also ex
perimenting with the harnessing
of wind for electric power. Also
a first step to the nuclear power
of the more distant future has
been taken with the prospects of
the construction of an experi
mental reactor under the U. S.
scheme for atomic energy de
velopment.
One big development of next
year will be the establishment
of many new agricultural villages
as the result of the completion
of the big Yarkon pipeline to the
Negeb. The sands of the Negeb,
for thousands of dunams will
blossom, let us say, if not like the
rose, like the grain of barley,
tomatoes and peanuts. If you
were a purchaser of State of Is
rael Bonds which established this
pipeline, you may have the grati
fication of knowing that you have
contributed to this development.
Next year in Israel should be a
big ydar, kain anhora.
