ROSH HASHONAH MESSAGE
A Year Of Life
By RABBI JACOB M. ROTHSCHILD
The Temple
For all its sombre overtones
and its solemnity, the one, cen
tral theme of Rosh Hashonah is
not death but life. Persecutions
have engulfed our people, vir
ulent hatreds have been directed
against us, our history is filled
with too many pages containing
records of darkness and despair.
Yet, each year, as we gather for
prayer on this sacred day, we
lift our heads in hope. We recall
not the bleakness of failure, but
rather the brightness of achieve
ment and of hope. “Remember

To All Members Of Mizrachi
And All Israel
May the year 5716 bring peace and harmony to Israel
and the world over. We, the Jewish, people must lift our
hearts to our heavenly father in prayer to help us with
guidance and strength to combat our enemies and aggres
sors whose wish is to wipe out our very existence. Let us
retaliate with Bonds for Israel to strengthen the hearts
and hands of our fighting men on the battle field.

ROSH HASHONAH MESSAGE
Visions And Hopes
By RABBI TOBIAS GEFFEN
Congregation Shearith Israel
As we once again prepare for
the celebration and observance
of Rosh Hashonah — The New
Year—our hearts and minds are
tilled with visions of the future
—visions of hope and optimism.
All of us have aspirations for
ourselves, for our children, for
our communities, for our beloved
country, 'Hie United States of
America and for Israel the Home
land of The Jewish People.
T his is the season of the year
when our optimism reaches its
highest peak. Our souls are in
spired to more vital living and to
us unto life, O King who de-
lightest in life.” These are the
words we pray.
Each year we utter them—and
each year we fulfill them. For
the people of Israel do live. No
power has been able to engulf
us, no tyrant to destroy us. Yet
nations far stronger than we have
disappeared. Peoples have been
erased from the pages of history.
Religions have become lost in
the myriads of time. Judaism
survives. Our survival is not
simply an accident of history, a
quirk of fate. We live because
we direct our thoughts to life.
On the New Year, we come
face to face with the challenge
to live. But it is not enough
merely to pray that God give
us life. God will remember us
only if we make ourselves
worthy of His help. Not “in
scribe us in the Book of Life”,
but help us so to live that we
shall write our own names on
the pages of that book. This is
the real challenge of our Holy
Day.
May the New Year be for all
of us a day of renewal of our
spirits, of girding our strength;
a day dedicated to an under
standing of our own potential as
children of God. May it remind
us of our out greatness, of the
joy that life holds for us, of the
fulfillment that can come to each
of us if we realize our own po
tential ns God’s agents in the
world which He created for us.
Then will it he a day of joy for
all of us, ushering in a year of
happiness for us, for our dear
ones, and for all mankind.
greater purpose in our existence.
From the first day of Rosh Flas-
honah through the entire Ten-
Day period of the High Holy
Days culminating with Yom Kip-
pur—the most sacred Day of
Atonement—we fill our minds
and hearts with these great hopes
for the entire year ahead.
The spiritual invigoration and
revitalization which we obtan
as members of the Household of
Israel on these great days of our
Solemn Festivals refresh our
energies for the coming year of
active living.
May The Almighty grant that
our vision and hopes for the
realization of our fondest dreams
may be realized during this New
Year. May all of you, my dear
and devoted friends of Atlanta
and of the entire southeastern
portion of our great country be
blessed with a “Shonoh Tovah”
—a year of life and best health,
a year of good fortune and pros
perity, a year of happy living
and everlasting peace for us, for
all Israel and for all humanity,
Amen!
