Message For The Jewish Year
5716 (1955)
, By RABBI JOSEPH COHEN
Or Ve Shalom Synagogue
As we stand upon the thresh- looking toward the 5716, there
hold of the year 5716,1 am happy
to extend to my fellow Jews and
to all my members my warmest
wishes for a happy New Year—
a year of contentment in our
lives, and fulfillment of our
hopes and prayers for lasting
peace throughout the world.
At the twilight of the years
5715-5716, many synagogues all
over the world, traditionally will
start the New Year services with
the beautiful hymn composed by-
Abraham Hazan Gerondi whose
stanzas end with the words:
“END NOW, O YEAR, WITH
THY EVILS AND WOES,” but
the last stanza closes with: “BE
GIN NOW, O YEAR, WITH
THY BLESSINGS AND JOYS.”
What an inspiring composition
of this poem holding two faces,
one of a farewell to the outgoing
year, and another of welcoming
of the ensuing year. Because
mankind looks backward and
then faces the New Year, hoping
that he and his world may ac
complish more in general, and
that individually man may find
more spiritual satisfaction and
greater progress toward the goals
of world peace and all tilings
wrapped up in the lips of the
prophets, who ever hoped for
“better world.”
Looking back, we can remem
ber the by-gone years in which
we looked ahead with greater'
fear, for the devastating wars,
and their evil consequences. But
Best Wishes For A
Joyous New Year

are many good signs that even
the so long feared cold war, will
be pushed further and further
away. We are of the hope that
the years ahead, will be one of
ideas instead of guns, and of
peaceful devices instead of de
structive implements. What the
future years will bring for man
kind depends largely on what
we, the living, do in 5716 and
the years ahead.
Recent international develop
ments illustrate that the process
of consolidaing world’s civiliza
tion is marked by a dynamic
eagerness of the great powers
“the summit conference”, which
sooner or later will give way to
a period of better understanding
among nations and subsequently
to the realization of an enduring
peace. With the 5716, such a
new period is beginning to open
for the world’s future prospec
tive. If we celebrate the New
Year guided by its lofty senti
ments and principles, it most
certainly will inspire us to great
and good constructive deeds. We
shall then have both the disposi
tion and willingness to dedicate
ourselves with zeal and devotion
to the solution of all problems
facing us during the ensuing
year. Thus we shall materially
contribute to the progress and
welfare of our community, our
country, our people, and all man
kind.
On this sacred occasion we
turn to our brethren of the State
of Israel with special greetings
and assuring them our determ
ination to stand by their side in
their historic task of creating a
free, democratic and progressive
society, based on the spiritual
and ethical concepts of Judaism.
With G-d’s help, we are resolved
that those who seek Israel’s de
struction shall not succeed in
their evil designs, and shall bend
every effort to ensure that the
year 5716 shall be one of peace
ful progress and accelerated
growth for the Jewish State.
May the prayers of these Holy
Days, strengthen us to rededi
cate ourselves in the years com
ing, and may the sound of the
Shofar awaken us to our re
sponsibilities. Animated by these
thoughts and cherishing the fond
