NEW YEAR MESSAGE
Teach Us llow To Pray
IJy RABBI FELDMAN
Beth Jacob Synagogue
The Yamim Noraim the
High Holidays, are times for
prayer. Some pray for life
and some for wealth; others
ask for strength and others
for glory. Many and varied
are the requests that are
made of our Maker during
these days.
However, perhaps the most
important prayer of all is ut
tered very rarely. Seldom do
we pray of the Lord that He
teach us HOW to pray as
Jews. And yet this is very
necessary. For though many
participate in prayer and go
through the motions of wor
ship, few indeed know how to
pray. For this reason, iohat-
ever prayers we do have are
often perfunctory, “MITZ-
VAS ANOSH1M' M’LUMA-
DA” as Isaiah put it long ago,
a service of the lips and not
of the heart, a Fridy night
habit, instead of a conscious
daily act.
This ability to pray is one
of the great but unfelt needs
of our time, not because of
the things we can obtain from
G-d, but because of prayer's
effect upon our own selves.
Everyone believes in the effi
cacy of prayer; few realize
its long-term personal impact.
As we pray on these holi
days, let us ask for the abil
ity to pray properly — for in
this we will be asking for life
and peace.

old and a native of Scotland, had

Baltimore Cantor
Holds One-Man
Portrait Exhibit
BALTIMORE (JTA) — A one-
man show of portraits by Cooper,
Cantor of the Har Sinai, is at
tracting much favorable comment
at the Hilltop Theatre in Luther
ville. Cantor Cooper has previ
ously exhibited in some of the
country’s leading galleries, in
cluding the Corcoran Galleries in
Washington, the Whitney Muse
um in New York, the Carnegie In
ternational at Pittsburg and the
Chicago Art Institute.
Cantor Cooper attended the
Pennsylvania Academy of Fine
Arts and while a student there
won a Cresson Traveling Schol
arship and other major awards.
brary of Judaica for children
and adults. The library will
feature a special section for
texts used in the religious
schools, so that parents will be
enabled to follow their chil
dren’s classroom work. There
will also be a special “music
nook,” with recordings of
all kinds.
The Sisterhood, too, has
ambitious plans. A new so
cial hall is being built, togeth
er with new and modern kit
chen facilities. Under the
leadership of Bess Harris,
president, the Sisterhood has
pledged itself to raise $5,000
towards this project duripg
the coming year. The social
hall will be among the finest
in the city, and will provide
a congenial atmosphere for
Kosher luncheons and din
ners.
