! lie Present Day Significance of the Newport
Letter of President George Washington
George Washington’s letter to the Newport Congregation was
an inspired expression of the feeling about religion and Amer
ica which has survived in most people to this very day. His let
ter is a pure and sincere indication of his great tolerance, some
thing that should be in the hearts of all people.
I believe he was trying to convey the thought that we are all
Americans, first of all, regardless of our race, color, or creed.
Because we are Americans we can work in harmony even with
our different beliefs. A good American is a good citizen no mat
ter where his destiny may take him. If we live up to the ideals
of America we will be good citizens.
His message has established a precedent which we have fol
lowed throughout the years. He treats the American people
as one nation under God. One of the basic rules of America and
the world is that we should always remember, above all else,
tnat one God created us all. Just as we have the right to share
equally in the same air. the same sun, and the same land so
should we, and do we, share the benefits of enlightenment and
tolerance. Democracy is really a plan of “give and take.” As
Jews we have taken a great deal, but we have also given of
ourselves — to the arts, science, government, and religion.
Letters and speeches similar to George Washington’s have
been written by many Presidents since his time. An example
of this is Theodore Roosevelt’s message, “The Jew as a Citizen,”
in November, 1905.
I believe we can sum up Washington’s letter by quoting Leo-
pold Zunz (1859) when he said, “In a free State, it is not the
S Christian that rules the Jew, neither is it the Jew that rules the
Christian; it is JUSTICE that rules.”

TO THE HEBERW CONGREGATION
IN NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND
Gentlemen:
While I receive, with much satisfaction, your Address replete witn
expressions of affection and esteem, I rejoice in the opportunity of as
suring you that I shall always retain a grateful remembrance of the cor.
dial welcome I experienced in my visit to Newport from all classes of
Citizens.
The reflection on the days of difficulty and danger which are past is
rendered the more sweet, from a consciousness that they are succeeded
by da vs of uncommon prosperity and security. If we have wisdom to
make the best use of the advantages with which we are now favored
we cannot fail, under the just administration of a good Government, to
3e-ome a great and happy people.
|. The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud
themselves for having given to Mankind examples of an enlarged and
liberal policy, a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of
cons' ience and immunities of citizenship. It is now no more that tolera
tion is spoken of as if it was by exercise of their inherent natural rights,
happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no
sanction, to persecution no assistance, requires only that they who live
Under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giv
ing it on all occasions their effectual support.
s It would be inconsistent with the frankness of my character not to
avow that I am pleased with your favorable opinion of my Adminis
tration, and fervent wishes for my felicity. May the Children of the
Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enioy
Ihe good will of the other Inhabitants, while every one shall sit in safe
ty under his own vine and fig tree, and there shall be none to make him
afraid. May the Father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness
In our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and
In his own due time and way everlastingly happy.
