for the observation of human dif
ficulties. Insights gained here may
be applied by the Rabbi to under
standing similar problems in per
sons who are not under the stress
of illness. The hospital also affords
the Rabbi practical experience in
ministering directly to patients
suffering from physical and emo
tional disturbances.
During their eight hour daily
schedule students spend two hours
a day visiting with patients on tire
wards; and three hours weekly in
individual conferences with the
program super visor.
The aims of the summer pi o-
gratn are geared to the needs of
spiritual leaders, "We’re not try
ing to teach Rabbis the names of
fractures or the management of
diseases,” says Rabbi Hollander,'
and we’u> not training them to ire
psychiatrists, psychologists or so
cial workers."
For ordained Rabbis ten semi
nars are held annually at Mt.
Sinai Hospital, New York, in co
operation with medical and psy
chiatric authorities. However, for
those ministers who want more
than tiie Mt. Sinai seminar the
Institute offers a training pre
gram in pastoral care.
Nine mcn-three each from the
representative religious branches—
meet at Bellevue Hospital once
a week for ten consecutive weeks.
Emphasis is placed on the prac
tical aspects of pastoral counselling
and the techniques a Rabbi may
utilize m his daily pastoral work.
In addition to regular seminars,
lectures and medical demonstra
tions, Rabbis do intensive ward
visiting. I he Rabbi's role in mar
riage counselling, ministering to
the sick and the emotional and
spiritual needs of the adolescent
are a few of the areas explored
in this series.
A chaplain renders more than a
religious service. He assists, in his
own way, the doctors, nurses; so
cial workers, wardens, and psy
chiatrists with whom he works.
As a Rabbi, he represents an ulti
mate purpose, goal and meaning
to the temporal being. Since he
has this special significance, he
can often establish a rappoit be
tween himself and a patient that
is difficult or impossible for any
one else to achieve.
Cnlv a Chaplain Could Do It
For example, in one psychiatric
hospital, a young man’s treatment
was making no progress. He was
completely withdrawn and uncoop,
erative; doctors could get little re
sponse from him. There was one
battel n in his background how
ever, that interested the attend
ing chaplain. Not that the boy
had ever been religious. Quite the
contrary. Since his adolescense, he
had rejected all his Jewish friends
and acquaintances; took pleasure
in telling Anti-Semitic - stories;
mocked Jewish ritual and obser
vance and in every way tried to
renounce his Jewish background.
A Rabbi in this case seemed the
least likely to have any* success.
