SCENE AT GROUNDBREAKING—Barney Medintz, president of the
Community Council, addresses the crowd gathered in the Social Hall of
the nearby Temple when rain prevented the exercises from being held
n the actual center site. Before him is a wheelbarrow filled with red
bit brought from the Center site for the ceremony. At the speaker’s

founders of the original Jewish Educational Alliance more than forty

Atlanta has a long, proud
history of sensitive respon
siveness to Jewish commu
nity needs, going back
more than half a century
to 1003 when a kindergar
ten and social settlement
were formed, later to be
merged with the Alliance.
Two years later, the
YMHA was organized.
Founders endowed the Al
liance Auditorium a n d
merged with the Jewish
Educational Alliance. ..In
1010, the foundation was
laid for the Alliance and
the building on Capitol Av
enue was the huh of Jew
ish recreational and com
munity activity through
1050. Original founders
still in Atlanta are Mrs. J
E. Sommerfield, Leonard
Haas, Hvman Jacobs, and
Dr. David Marx.

beginnings 10 years ago
when a small group of men
