Renewed “U. S. Klan” Activity
Blights Georgia, South Carolina
by ARTHUR J. LEVIN
Director, Southeastern Office Anti-Defamation
League of B’nai B’rith
Hitler painted houses with a
brush. The self-styled “Imperial
Wizard” of the newly organized
U. S. Klans paints automobiles
with a mechanical sprayer. De
spite this advance in technology,
they share in common the same
primitive, discredited ideas about
white Anglo-Saxon supremacy over
Negroes, Catholics, Jews, and other
non-Aryan “foreigners.”
The “Imperial Wizard” of the
"U. S. Klans—Knights of the Ku
Klux Kian” is Eldon Lee Edwards
of Atlanta, Ga. His headquarters
and “business” address is a post
office box in Atlanta. He is 4ti
years old, married, with no chil
dren. Edwards is employed as a
paint sprayer at the Chevrolet Di
vision of General Motors in At
lanta, whore his current activities
are of grave concern to his em
ployers and the United Auto Work
ers local union. Edwards has a
police record.
His coterie in Atlanta consists
of Millard Wesley Morgan, age 62,
(also with a police record> who
runs the Capitol Upholstering Shop;
a Church of Christ preacher, Rev.
M. H. Smith, age 55; and the four
members of the “Christian Anti-
Jcwish Party" in Atlanta. The
U. S. Klans is essentially a "one
man” operation, with very little
following in and around Atlanta
because of close police surveillance.
At a Klan rally near Conway,
S. C., on August 20th before a
flaming cross, Edwards shouted,
"This is a white man's organiza
tion fighting for white supremacy."
He said his group's purpose is not
to discriminate but to organize
"strong enough" and “vicious
enough" to "protect ourselves
against the evils brought on by the
NAAC, Knights of Columbus, and
the Aniti-Defamation League." He
added that the Knights of Colum
bus should go to Italy and that
Israel is the place for the Anti-
Defamation League.
Edwards was assisted at the Con
way meeting by J. H. Bickley of
Marion, S. C„ self-styled Kleagle
(organizer), and the invocation was
given by J. B. Elmore of Oswego,
S. C. The meeting was held on
private property belonging to “Doc”
Anderson, seven miles north of
Conway on Highway 701.
Bryant Bowles, head of the no
toriously anti-semitic National As
sociation for the Advancement of
White People, was the principle
speaker at the Manning, S. C., Klan
meeting on August 27th, at which
he indulged in his usual anti
semitism. Bowles spoke some
months ago to the Florence (S. C.)
Chapter of the NAAWP (now
known as the States Rights League
of Florence County) and made one
of the most vitriolic anti-semitic
speeches ever heard in the area.
Four robed and hooded Klansmen
who officiated in the absence of
Edwards refused to divulge their
identity.
The reason Edwards was not
present at the Manning rally was
because he was busily staging a
similar meeting in Georgia the
same night, in South Cobb County
between Atlanta and Marietta. A
fifty-foot cross was burned, ac
cording to witnesses, before some
200 to 300 persons on private prop
erty on S. Gordon Road. There
were some robed and hooded
Klansmen present, but none wore
masks and there was no disorder.
The new U. S. Klans first came
to public attention in 1954 when
it staged rallies near Conyers, Ga„
on September 25th, and near
Tucker, Ga„ on October 2nd. Both
towns are on the outskirts of At
lanta. and large crowds reportedly
attended the “rebirth" of the Klan.
which came as a surprise to some
Southern observers. The old Klan
line of white supremacy, anti-
Negro, anti-Catholic, and anti-
semitic tirades, mixed with a com
munism and segregation scare, was
no surprise, however.
Another rally on June 11th was
held on private property six miles
northwest of Sumter, S. C. t owned
by a farmer named Johnson. There
were four speakers in addition to
Edwards, all of whom refused to
identify themselves. A Florence,
S. C., meeting on August 13th was
also held on private property, where
the FLORENCE MORNING NEWS
city editor Charles Moore charged
that he was struck from behind
while covering the meeting. Ed
wards denied that the U. S. Klans
