meeting, and Moore was not able
to identify his assailant. Crosses
were burned at all of these meet
ings.
These South Carolina rallies at
tracted very large crowds, mostly
teen-age and young adult curiosity
seekers. Very few robed and hood
ed Klansmen were in evidence, and
there have been comparatively few
"customers” in response to Ed
wards’ invitation to join the U. S.
Klans. The state anti-Klan laws,
patterned after ADL models, have
been carefully observed in that all
meetings were held on private
property, no masks were worn, and
there were no cavalcades to or
from the meetings, which county
and state police kept under careful
surveillance.
Edwards is also involved in an
attempted revival of the Klan in
East Texas, where the mails in 22
counties have been flooded with
Klan literature. Edwards is in
“partnership” there with Horace
Sherman Miller of Waco, a pen
sioned invalid who previously or
ganized the "Aryan Knights of the
Ku Klux Klan”. State Attorney
John Ben Sheppard is investigat
ing! the current Texas activity,
and has stated, “There is no reason
or purpose for the Ku Klux Klan
in Texas in 1955. We must throw
out these hoodlums and hate-
mongers.” Texas law provides stiff
penalties for operations by masked
or hooded organizations. Similar
laws are in effect in North Caro
lina, where Attorney General Wil
liam Rodman declared that "North
Carolina doesn’t want the Klan or
kindred organizations."
The Association of Southern At
torneys General on August 22nd
strongly condemned any and all
attempts to revive the Klan. Geor
gia Attorney General Eugene Cook
said he opposes the Klan on gen
eral principles, will keep them
under close surveillance, and will
ask the National Association of At
torneys General to adopt resolu
tions against the Klan.
Sheriff John Henry of Horry
County (Conway, S. C.) publicly
condemned the Klan in the strong
est possible language immediately
after the Sumter meeting. Federal
Judge Ashton H. Williams, presid
ing officer of the Eastern District
of South Carolina, made a blistering
attack from the bench against the
KKK (and the NAACP). Editorial
comment in most southern news
papers has generally been highly
unfavorable to this new Klan.
whose predecessors are included in
the U. S. Attorney General’s list
of subversive organizations.
Those familiar with recent Klan
history may tend to discount the
current flurry of activity because
of the prosecution of a number of
North and South Carolina Klans
men several years ago, and be
cause of the present unfavorable
comments by state officials and
the newspapers. But it is a mat
ter of concern that a large number
of young people are being sub
jected to this un-American hate
propaganda, some of which might
rub off under the conditions of
excitement and dramatic impact.
