The S/S “Israel,” new flagship
of the Zim Israel Navigation
Company Ltd., of Haifa, will ar
rive in New York on Thursday,
October 27th, on her maiden
voyage from Israel, it was an
nounced today by the American-
Israeli Shipping Company, Inc., of
19 Rector Street, New York City,
U. S. representatives of the Zim
Lirtes.
The 10,500 gross ton, turbine-
driven liner will inaugurate the
only all-year round direct pas
senger service between the Unit
ed States and the Holy Land.
She will accommodate 318 pas
sengers in ultra-modern First and
Tourist Class quarters.
The ’Israel” will sail from New
York on her first Eastbound voy
age on Friday, Nov. 4. Subse
quent sailings from New York
will be on December 16, 1955
and January 27 and March 9,
1956. By mid-February, the Is
rael will be joined by her sister-
ship, the S/S "Zion.” The twin
liners will offer a sailing in each
direction every three weeks there
after.
The “Israel," designed for the
warm water southern route, will
carry 224 Tourist Class and 94
First Class passengers, all in out
side staterooms, many of them
with adjoining private bath or
shower. All First Class state
rooms and public rooms and the
Tourist Class dining salon will
be air conditioned.
Other features of the new ship
include bedrooms convertible to
day-time sitting rooms, glass en
closed promenades, sports deck,
outdoor tiled swimming pool, chil
dren’s playroom, hair-dressing
salon, gift shop, and a “Cinema
scope” movie screen. The four
passenger decks will be served
by passenger and baggage eleva
tors.
The “Israel” has a fully equip
ped, air conditioned synagogue
seating fifty persons. She will
also have facilities for religious
observances by all faiths, a fea
ture common to every Zim pas
senger liner.
The “Israel” is a single-screw
vessel, powered by double-reduc
tion geared turbines generating
over 11,000 horsepower. She will
have a top speed of 19 knots,
though she will normally cruise
at 17, making the Haifa-New
York voyage in 13 1/2 days via
Naples and Gibralter. She will
call occasionally at Halifax West
bound.
A team of leading Israeli art
ists and craftsmen are now put
ting the finishing touches on the
liner’s interior. Her decor will
reflect her country’s pioneer de
velopment and Biblical heritage.
The “Israel” is streamlined in
external appearance, with a
sharply raked, “soft nose” bow,
rounded bridge front and cruiser
stern. She will carry a single
funnel, two masts and 4 radar
mast stepped on the wheelhouse
top. Other modem navigation
aids include ship-to-shore wire
less telephone, gyro compass, au
tomatic pilot, wireless direction
finder and echo sound depth re
corder. The ship has an over
all length of 501 feet and a 65-
foot beam.
The “Israel” and her sister-
ship, “Zion,” are being built by
the Deutsche Werft yards of Ham
burg A third liner, the S/S The
odore Herd, with accommoda
tions for 550 passengers in one
class is also building in West
Germany for the Zim Lines’
trans-Mediterranean express ser
