J D C Helps 165,000 Overseas
In 1954, Abstract Indicates
The Joint Distribution Com
mittee, major American agency
aiding distressed Jews abroad,
provided assistance to 165,750
needy Jews in Israel, Europe and
the Moslem world, the Ninth An
nual Issue of the JDC Statistical
Abstract, published last week,
disclosed.
The largest group aided —
95,930 — were Jews in seven
Moslem countries of Asia and
North Africa, where more than
one of every six Jewish men, wo
men and children received the
agency’s help.
The Abstract indicates the con
tinued expansion in the assistance
provided by Malben, JDC’s wel
fare program on behalf of the
aged, ill and handiaapped new
comers to Israel. In contrast with
some 21,500 who received Mal
ben aid in 1953, in 1954 the pro
gram aided 25,750 men, women
and children in a network of
old-age homes, custodial care
centers, hospitals, sanitariums,
sheltered workshops and other in
stitutions throughout the Jewish
state. Included were some 14,-
050 individuals who benefited
through Malben constructive
loans. Largely as a result of the
Malben program, JDC’s program
in Israel, though accounting for
only 25 percent of the agency’s
worldwide beneficiaries, was re
sponsible for more than 48 per
cent of the total JDC appropri
ations.
In 1955 JDC allocated a major
share of its budget for its Mal
ben program. Funds for JDC’s
overseas relief, rehabilitation and
reconstruction programs are pro
vided by the United Jewish Ap
peal. ,
Summarizing some of JDC’s
activities since the end of World
War II, the Abstract reveals that
in the post-war period the over
seas relief agency shipped 231,-
800,929 pounds of food, wearing
apparel and other commodities,
including medical supplies, from
the United States, in addition to
thousands of pounds of such it
ems purchased overseas.
Among those receiving JDC aid
during 19(54, the Abstract notes,
were: 16,765 receiving cash relief;
52,250 receiving feeding assist
ance, including more than 35,000
in Moslem countries; 40,845 re
ceiving medical aid in 177 insti
tutions; 9,180 youngsters receiv
ing aid in 88 child care institu
tions; 86,385 receiving education
al and religious assistance; 16,-
467 in ODT vocational training
centers, and 2,049 receiving emi
gration aid. During 1954 JDC-
financed credit institutions made
4,187 loans, amounting to $1,409,-
050, to aid needy and disabled
men and women to reestablish
themselves economically.
In a foreword to the Abstract,
