HOLIDAY MESSAGE
Oneness of Mankind
By RABBI CHARLES M. RUBEL
Sherah Israel Synagogue, Macon, Ga.
It is with deep gratitude to the
Almighty that I take this occasion
to extend a very hearty wish to
all of Klal Yisroel for a Very
Happy and prosperous New Year.
It js with deep gratitude also that
we may note, as we stand on the
threshold of the Hebrew New Year
5716, that the tensions in the world
about us have somewhat been
eased, that for the moment at least,

we can all breathe more freely, in
the knowledge that after all we
may not be faced with destruction
at the hands of the A and H bombs,
as we have feared during the past
decade, since the first A Bomb
fell on Hiroshima. For this re
spite, we give thanks to God.
But we must also realize that
we cannot attain real and ever
lasting peace, until a fundamental
change comes over our thinking,
until we drastically revise our eco
nomic, political, and religious
thinking. One of the great deter
rents to world happiness has been
the universal reliance that we have
placed in material things during
the past. Americans have felt that
the supremacy of the material
wealth of America, is sufficient to
guarantee our safety and we can
use the “big stick” in our dealings
with the nations whom we have
helped materially during the past
35 years since the close of World
War I. We have poured billions
into European nations, and have
saved them from economic death
and strangulation. Yet, as former
President Hoover noted in his
birthday speech a few weeks ago,
these very nations despise us, and
scoff at our culture and way of life.
Evidently we have placed a wrong
emphasis somewhere. That em
phasis has been upon the glorifica
tion of the material status of Amer
ica, our wealth and economic power.
We have left out in our propa
ganda to these nations, the fact
that America is the real cradle of
democracy, justice, freedom and
brotherhood. We did not tell these
nations that America was built up
from the rich resources of the dif
ferent groups who came here, to
find their happiness and to escape
from the persecutions of the
European tyrants, and kings, who
until recently ruled by Divine
Right, and not by what is right
and just for all their citizens.
Dr. Morris Raphael Cohen, in
his brilliant analysis of “American
Thought” brings out this dangerous
emphasis of modern America, when
we find that business rules the
America of today. But he also
says, that this modern glorifica
tion and influence of the business
man in the America of today, must
not necessarily be an unhealthy
one. He says that they can if they
will, contribute to the culture of
America and to enhancing the
spiritual values of American civili
zation.
To us Jews the message of Rosh
Hashonah comes every year with
regularity, to remind us NOT to
place our reliance upon the ma
terial, but rather to subdue the
material to the spiritual, to realize
that God is King—“Hashem Me-
lech." This implies all the great
values of the oneness of mankind,
the brotherhood of all peoples, and
the universality of man’s desire to
live in peace, and be helpful to
each other in need.
This is a message that may well
be taken into the hearts of diplo
mats, when they gather around the
green tables to decide the destinies
of men and nations. It is thus
that Judaism, in the opening of
the Rosh Hashonah liturgy, calls
out with all its might “Veyesosu
Kulom Aguda Echos,” let all man
kind become one fellowship. Let
us hope that day will soon come,
Amen.
