A LIVING JUDAISM
No religion is worth its salt which does not make great
demands upon its adherents. The greatest enthusiasm
was always engendered by faiths which called for the great
est sacrifices on the part of their devotees who receive in
return great compensation and satisfaction which their souls
desired. According ]to our tradition, increased merit and
worth were bestowed upon Israel through the very abund
ance of the commandments which were given to it.
Too many of our people want an easy-going religion, one
which does not interfere with their leisure, their sleep, or
their television, which calls for no study and no observance,
which does not challenge or disturb them, a religion without
any spiritual travail, without any stab of thought or con
science, without any sacrifices, the religion of a self-pamper
ing people. No religion has ever survived that kind of an
emotional and intellectual vacuum. Judaism least of all.

Dear Boys and Girls — your

heroes of ancient Israel.

Dear Boys and Girls:
The Festive of Succoth, the
Feast of Tabernacles, which starts
on the fifteenth day of this High
Holiday month of Tishre, and
lasts for nine days, is really a
double holiday, having two dis
tinct aspects. It is primarily a
festival in remembrance of the
wanderings of the Children of
Israel in the Wilderness for forty
years—before they entered the
Promised Land of Palestine.
During this period of time, the
Israelites lived in temporary
dwellings, known as “succoth” in
Hebrew. For the first seven days
of the holiday, orthodox brethren
eat and drink in these “succoth”
which have been erected before
the festival. Many pious Jews
even sleep in these “booths,” and
thus have a deeper conception of
the historical significance of these
temporary huts.
Now, the very fact that to this
very day, after these thousands
of years, we Jews still observe
this festival by the erection of
booths, proves beyond any shad
ow of doubt that the historic
event recorded in the Bible is
true and that something mar
velous happened at that time.
Succoth also commemorates
the gathering of the harvest. It
is a time of thanksgiving and
rejoicing.
It is very interesting to note
that part of the ceremonial in
the synagogue during the first
seven days is the beautiful, tra
ditional “Blessing of the Lulab”

on Succoth, each individual must
take an “esrog” (Palestinian
lime), “Lulab” (palm branch),
myrtle, and willow leaves—hold
ing them together, pronounce a
special benediction and “wave”
them in a prescribed manner.
This ceremony has many different
meanings, the most symbolical of
which is that the individual must
try to acquire the attributes of
these four plants: the “esrog”
which symbolizes beauty of char
acter; the “lulab” which signifies
uprightness and dignity; the
myrtle, which signifies pure and
noble action; and the willow,
which signifies meekness and hu
mility.
The eight day of the festival
is known as “Shemini Atzereth”
—the Eight Day of Solemn As
sembly. And the last day is
“Simchath Torah” — the “Rejoic
ing of the Law.” On this day, the
last sections of the Bible are
read, and when this reading is
completed, the story of the crea
tion of the world is begun. In
other words, it shows that the
Bible is continuous, everlasting,
living “Torah.” On Simchath
Torah the Jewish people express
