World Brotherhood In Our Midst
(Continued from page 18)
ing the past quarter of a century,
the most significant and far-reach
ing contribution was the extension
of our human relations philosophy
and techniques to the international
scene through World Brotherhood,
founded in Paris in 1950; and I
believe this to be true even though
it might not be fully understood
in the rank and file of the Na
tional Conference of Christians and
Jews. (2) I believe that our
Greensboro “World Brotherhood in
Our Midst’’ project may usefully
be emulated wherever colleges and
universities with foreign students
lend themselves to such an under
taking. Imagine a wave of such
series of conferences reaching 34,-
000 young foreign students and,
consequently, many times more
Americans of all age groups! We
cannot fail to profit from such an
experience. As to our young friends
from abroad . . . the very least
they will learn is that we, the
plain American people, are most
deeply desirous of living in peace
and harmony with all people of
goodwill the world over, this mak
ing world brotherhood a living
reality, and World Brotherhood
one of those forces which may
ultimately affect the destiny of
mankind.

Missile Test Center while there is
a Chapel there available to people
of all faiths, the percentage of
Jewish military personnel station
ed there did not warrant a full
time Jewish Chaplain. Since the
nearest synagogue was at least 65
miles away, a few civilians, either
working at this Base or living in
the neighboring communities of
Cocoa, Eau Gallie and Melbourne,
decided to conduct services at the
Base Chapel and Rabbi J. Kesten-
baum who at that time was with
Congregation Chev Sholum in Or
lando helped them organize.
Before long, attending Friday
night and High Holy Day services,
ably conducted by members of the
organization became a habit. I, for
one, seldom attended services while
living in a large Northern city and
now seldom miss one. We have had
five Seders so far, each year find
ing a marked increase in attend
ance. We are most fortunate in
having the fine Chapel in which to
conduct our services but unfor
tunately it does not have the usual
vestry room found with a syna
gogue where we could gather so
cially and hold our Seders, etc.
The young folks at Patrick Air
Force Base — as is natural - look
for some social life such as dances
where they can meet other Jewish
boys and girls from other com
munities. Our homes here are not
large enough for entertaining on
that scale. However, we hope and
are striving to have a large enough
Jewish population in Brevard
County to have our own syna
gogue and community center.
Nevertheless, our members are
always ready with a minyon for
a Bris or a Jahrzeit. If we hear
of an out-of-town Jewish patient
in one of the local hospitals, we
call on them and do what we can
to help them until they can retuin
to their homes. Some of our mem
bers just last year brought such a
patient in a wheel chair to a Cha
nukah party given by the Brother
hood. She had been in an auto
mobile accident, knew nobody in
the community, and was hundreds
of miles from her home.
If I were asked what the Bre
vard Jewish Brotherhood means to
me, I would say that it has be
come a “home away from home”
for our boys in service and also
for young and older folks moving
into this community who are so
apt to miss the close Jewish fami
ly times.
