Samir Ahmed charged in Macon
recently.
His point was challenged in a
note sent to the platform by a
Jewish member of the audience,
but it was not read.
Later Ahmed was cornered by
the leader. He admitted he should
have said “that American Jews
are eligible for Israeli citizenship
‘if they desire it,’ and it is not
automatically in force.”
The speech was sponsored by
the Macon Council on World Af
fairs. About 150 persons, includ
ing six Jewish persons, were
present, but another hundred
were believed turned away for
lack of room.
The diplomat attacked Dulles’
Middle East policy and warned
that Russia is taking advantage
'bf “United States mistakes” and
is winning out by default on the
part of the U. S.
“The Arabs are grieved to find
the United States compromising
its principles on colonialism be
cause of the world situation and
its alliances with England and
France,” he asserted.
He said the U. S. has voted
against discussion of the Middle
Eastern problems on several oc
casions, while Russia has champ
ioned that cause.
Egypt’s self-liberation move
ment was inspired by U. S. ideas,
he continued, and I feel that this
weapon which Russia is using
should belong to the United
States.
One of the questions from the
floor was “Are you not contra-
verting the will of God and the
coming of the Messiah in pre
venting the fulfillment of the
prophetic message on the return
of Jews to the Holy Land?" Ah
med said he was a student of
the Korman and not of the Bible,
nevertheless he felt that the
prophets were referring to only
the return from Babylon in 515

PURIM SYMBOL
OF FREEDOM
Dear Boys and Girls:
Here we are - on the eve of
Purim, the Feast of Lots, one of
our most joyous festivals which
holds so much meaning for us
today.
Of course, everyone is more or
less familiar with the Biblical
story of Queen Esther and her
cousin Mordecai, and the man
ner in which they saved the Jews
of Persia — present-day Iran —
from a terrible fate at the hands
of Haman.
It was the aim and desire of
this wicked schemer, who had
risen to a position of power at
the court of Xerxes, to destroy
the Jewish people completely, to
wipe them out so that no trace
might remain. He was the Hitler
of his age.
Esther, famous for her charm
and beauty, was chosen to replace
the luckless Vashti in the af
fections of King Xerxes. When
Mordecai informed her of the
sad plight of her people, she
fasted for three days and three
nights. She spent her time in
prayer. Then, finally, she se
cured an audience with the king,
despite the fact that according to
the laws of the Persians and
Medes, the queen might not ap
pear before the king except when
expressly summoned by him.
Queen Esther and Mordecai,
with God’s help, succeeded in de
feating the wicked Haman’s plans,
with the result that the Jews
were saved. Haman was hung on
the very gallows he had made
for Mordecai. God made him fall
into his own trap.
In eternal thankfulness to our
Creator for the salvation He
brought us then, we make the
13th day of Adar each year —
falling out this month 1 on Feb
ruary 25, — a day of fasting
known as The Fast of Esther. It
comes out one day before Purim
which is on February 26. Purim
itself, of course, is a day of great
rejoicing and merrymaking. The
name Purim, as you know, means
casting lots, and it is so named
because Haman had cast lots to
determine when would be the
most favorable time to destroy
the Jews, and the 14th day of
Adar was the date chosen.
The story of Purim has always
served to remind the Jewish na
tion that no matter how bad
their situation may seem, no mat
ter how many “Hamans” arise in
each generation and seek to blot
out Israel from the world — and
there are some in the world to
day — the Lord will always re
member His people, providing, of
course, they do not lose faith in
Him.
Purim also teaches us another

“Cross Currents ” Headed
For Best Seller Listing
More than 18,000 persons have
bought a book that isn’t printed
yet.
By the time the publishers get
it out - March 15 is publication
date - the advance sale is likely
to swell to 30,000 or more.
This “sight unseen” popularity
sometimes happens with a Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical or a
Christian Dior frock, the custo
mers flocking to buy long before
it’s finished and the professional
critics have had their chance to
talk it up or down.
But among book buyers - never.
Or almost never.
The exception that has become
a pleasant bewilderment among
publishing executives is “Cross-
Currents,” the upcoming expose
of worldwide political anti-semi-
tism based on investigations made
by the Anti-Defamation League
of B’nai B’rith. Advance orders
for the book - it’s written by

lesson. It reminds us of the fact
( that we can expect help from
God only when we assist our
selves. For, as we saw, Esther
had to make up her mind and
act; so also Morecai — and the
Lord prospered them.
And so, Dear Boys and Girls,
you have a whole week to get
ready for this wonderful holiday
which we will discuss again next

ti-Defamation League - are com
ing in at a rate of 1,200 a week.
“This,” says one publishing of
ficial, “is book buying with a
vengeance.”
Authors Forster and Epstein,
two of the nation’s best-informed
experts on anti-Semitic move
ments and the men and money
behind them - previously collab
orated on “The Troublemakers,”
an ADL best-seller published in
1952 by Doubleday.
“Cross-Currents” is the fourth
in a series of commercially pub
lished books based on documenta
tion from ADL’s authoritative
files. The series grew out of the
League’s annual reports on anti-
Semitism which each year com
manded impressive public at
tention.
Requests for copies of these
surveys exhausted the single
printing which the League was
able to finance.
That’s when Doubleday, one
of the world’s leading publish
ing houses, stepped in with a
suggestion that ADL popularize
its reports for publication as a
commercial book.
Seeing an opportunity to spread
its data on anti-Semitism to a
wider reading audience, the
League agreed. Each of the three
previous books went to several
printings. “The Troublemakers”
also achieving best-seller lists.
Public acceptance of ADL’s re
ports - its willingness to buy the
book in large numbers - has
meant additional income for the
League through royalties, all' of
which are paid to the League
exclusively.
“Cross-Currents” will retail at
$4.25. By special arrangement
pre-publication orders placed
with the Southeastern Region
ADL office, 41 Exchange Place,
S.E., Atlanta, Ga., will be filled
at the special price of $2.00 a
copy until the publication date,
March 15.
