AN ERA IN SOCIAL WORK COMES TO END
Hundreds of persons within the Jewish community of
Atlanta was saddened last week to learn of the death of
Miss Rhoda Kaufman, veteran social worker.
Miss Kaufman pioneered in the field of public welfare
work, an activity which drew her into the personal lives of
many thousands — sometimes for brief encounters, sometimes
longer. These were usually cherished moments for she had
the capacity of imparting understanding and confidence, not
only in the professionals who worked close to her but with the
men and women who under ordinary circumstances might
have passed simply as another case number in the record.
This was one of her chief capacities and one she succeeded
in sharing with the scores of workers who were on her staff
and whom she trained through the years. Many went on to
high posts in the social welfare field.
Her contacts in the broader arena of civic and communal
affairs were equally efficacious and her absence will be keenly
felt.
A special tribute to her was expressed by the Atlanta
Journal in the following editorial:
AN UNSELFISH CAREER ENDS
Rhoda Kaufman, who died here this week, dedicated her life
to the cause of humanities, particularly In the field of social welfare.
She found great satisfaction in pioneering—in leading movements de
signed to close gaps on the broad front of social service activities.
Associates often said that none was as familiar with the social
welfare picture in Atlanta as Miss Rhoda, for she was the motivating
force In many of the established agencies and a leader in organizing
new ones.
She was a former executive secretary of the State Welfare Depart
ment. She functioned as executive secretary of the Family Welfare
Society and as head of the Atlanta Social Planning Council. She was
identified with many other phases of the work.
Recognition for her efforts came in many ways. In 1943, she was
Woman of the Year in Social Welfare.
mIm Kaufman left for those who will take up the work in her
•toad, a fine example of public service. Her compassion for others
stands a a monument to a life of unselfish endeavor.
