Scientists Select
Israel As Site For
Two Conferences
NEW YORK, March 5, (JTA)
—Two international scientific or
ganizations have selected Israel as
the site for their meetings this
spring because they conider the
Middle East a particularly fertile
area for scientific and technical
discussions in their respective
fields, it was revealed today by
Prof. Herman F. Mark,' director of
the Polymer Institute at the Poly
technic Institute of Brooklyn.
These two international bodies
are the Commission on Macromo
lecules of the International Union
of Pure and Applied Chemistry
and the Technical Panel on Wood
Chemistry in the Food and Agri
cultural Organization of the Unit
ed Nations. Prof. Mark, who
serves as chairman of both groups,
made the announcement at a
luncheon given in his honor to
day at the St. Regis Hotel by the
Weizmann Institute of Science.
The luncheon was attended by
a number of distinguished scien
tists, among them Prof. I. Rabi,
Nobel Laureate and chairman of
the Advisory Committee to the
Atomic Energy Commission.
Prof. Mark said that the Weiz
mann Institute at Rehovoth, Is
rael, had been chosen as the
meeting place of the two congress
es because its scientists have
made very significant contribu
tions to the subject fields during
the past two years. He added that
over 50 countries, including Rus
sia, Japan and India, would be
represented at the conferences.

CIUDAD TRUJILLO, Domin
ican Republic, Jan. 30. (JTA) —
A citation praising former Pres
ident Rafael Trujillo for his
“great humane act” in helping
establish a colony here of Jew
ish refugees from Nazism was
awarded to the former president
at a banquet held here last night
to celebrate the fifteenth anni
versary of the colony.
The award was presented to
Senor Trujillo by Maurice B.
Hexter, of New York, president
of the Dominican Republic Set
tlement Association. The colony
was organized 15 years ago after
Trujillo donated a 26,000-acre
/ farmland for the project.
Ike’s Immigration Revision Stand
Welcomed by Labor Group
NEW YORK—President Eisen
hower’s message to Congress urg
ing revision of the McCarran-
Walter Immigration Act was wel
comed today by the Jewish Labor
Committee as “a significant step
forward.”
The JLC commended the Pres
ident for advocating the substitu
tion of the 1950 total population
census for the 1920 white popula
tion in the present law. This will
increase the number of immigrants
to the United States by 65,000 over
the present limitations. The JLC
also pointed out that they ap
proved the fast that the President
had advocated shifting of unused
quotas and the elimination of
mortgaged quotas. The elimina
tion of fingerprinting of visitors
and the repeal of racial, ethnic
designations on application forms
were additional features of the
President’s message winning the
JLC’s commendation.
“There is a serious omission in
the President’s message,” the JLC
aid. “Before the final bill is ham
mered out we hope that the ques
tion of placing naturalized citizens
on an equality basis with native-
born citizens will be written into
the law. This is most essential.
The second-class citizenship fea
ture of the present law invokes
punishments and requirements
not provided for native-born citi
zens.”
“The inequities in the present
law have been vividly underscor
ed by the President in his mes
sage,” the JLC statement continu
ed. “The McCarran-Walter Immi
gration Act has been an obstacle
to the fulfillment of America’s
leadership as a world power. It
has given Soviet propagandists a
field day to hurt us with friends
and potential allies. Our value as
a nation in the events and af
fairs of free men depends on the
kind of action and the rapidity
of it that it is taken to make the
President’s recommendations the
law of the land.
“We are happy to note that the
President has recommended
change of the national origin quota
system. He has advocated study
of a substitute system to replace
the national origin quota.’ We feel
that this matter has received suf
ficient and thorough considera
tion by the various agencies, ex
pert in the field of immigration.
Such legislation, in our opinion,
can be undertaken immediately.
“We hope that the Congress
will give priority to the Presi
dent’s recommendation and that
he, himself, will give vigorous
leadership in behalf of his pro
posals.”
