Dear Boys and Girls:
Monday night is the 14th day
of the Hebrew Spring month of
Nissan and after sunset this
March 26th day we will all be
sitting around the Seder table
listening to the Hagaddah re
lating the biblical story of the
Exodus and Moses’ victory over
the ancient Egyptians. It is a
wonderful story and has a special
meaning for all of us today in
the face of our present enemies.
It should give us courage and
strengthen our faith in our Ever-
Near Creator.
Passover is a festival of free
dom and thanksgiving. It is a
time when every man is a king
in his own home and every wo
man a queen. Because Pesach
marked our redemption from the
slavery of Egypt and the begin
ning of our nationhood under the
leadership of Moses, this festival
for us Israelites living all over
the world Is very much like the
Fourth of July marking the In
dependence of America.
The recitation of the Hagaddah
and the other ceremonies of the
first two nights of Passover are
called, as you know, the Seder,
because Seder means outline or
order. Now all of the other im
portant events in Jewish history
—the giving of the Torah on
Mount Sinai, the observance of
the various festivals, the enter
ing into the Promised Land, etc.
— were all connected in some
way with the exodus from Egypt.
In other words, our national his
tory starts with Passover and
all the other matters related to
our universal religion date from
this great event and follow each
other in the proper order.
During the Seder service each
of us will drink four cups of
wine, two before the meal which
is served at the half-way mark
in the recitation of the Hagaddah,
and two after the meal. On ev
ery holiday evening, two cups
of wine are drunk, but on Pass-
over two additional ones to in
crease the joy of the festival and
to symbolize the four different
phrases in which the redemption
of Israel is announced in the
Book of Exodus.
Your eyes, of course, will turn
to the single, exalted Cup pre
pared for Elijah, the prophet of
Peace and Brotherhood, whose
mysterious goings and comings
throughout Israel’s history have
become the subject of many leg
ends — and in every legend
there is some truth. During the
Seder service, you will note that
Elijah’s Cup will be raised as
one of you goes to open the door
for a few minutes as a symbol of
welcome to the prophet who is
mentioned in the Bible as being
the messenger who will announce
the future redemption of Israel.
During the eight-day Passover
festival, as you know, all leaven
ed foods are forbidden, and the
use of the year-round dishes and
utensils is prohibited. Food pro-

Dear Boys and Girls — eight
wonderful days are ahead of you,
and during the Seder one of you
will ask the “king” of the fes
tival sitting at the head of the
table the “Four Questions” and
so find out why this night and
this season is different from any
other night and season. Ours is
a wonderful history and we all
have good reason to be thankful
to our Creator. Happy Shabbath
and a joyous Pesach. ——
