Passover Message
By Rabbi Meyer H. Marx
Temple Beth El, Knoxville
of our holy faith.
Freedom — an idea which
changed history! A man named
Moses who sarcificed the lux
urious life of the-palace of the
Egyptian Pharoah to become
not just the leader of a group
of rebellious slaves, but the
protagonist of a magnificent
new concept of human exist
ence! Miracles — a sea opens
up to let the Jewish people es
cape from Egypt; darkness,
plagues! The seder — songs,
games, special foods not only
good to eat but reminding us of
our history and God’s bounty!
Prayers — not only for the
welfare of the Jew but inspir
ing in their universal character!
Welcome to the Springtide;
recalling The Song of Songs,
one of loveliest poetic works in
Holy Scripture! The light side
—Had Gadya (an only kid),
the search for the Matzoh, fam
ilies gathered in happy fellow
ship! Yes, all these and more
make up the Passover Season

Lift Arms Embargo
NEW ORLEANS, (JTA) —
Governor Theodore R'. McKeldin
of Maryland called on the Wes
tern Powers, including the Unit
ed States, “to lift the arms em
bargo against Israel.” The Wes
tern world, he said, “has had
enough proof that its only reli
able friend in the Middle East is
Israel.” He spoke at a United
Jewish Appeal conference at
which communities from Louisi
ana, Alabama, Tennessee, Mis
sissippi and Northern Florida
contributed mere than $500,000
for the nationwide 1956 UJA
drive.
Of the full amount that was
contributed, $150,000 was for the
United Jewish Appeal emergen
cy Special Survival Fund to help
make possible the resettlement in
Israel this year of 45,000 Jewish
refugees from North Africa, and
$350,000 represented gifts to the
UJA’s 1956 regular campaign
for the support of settlement,
welfare and rehabilitation pro
grams in Israel and other coun
tries. Speakers included Label
A. Katz, of New Orleans, nation
al cabinet member of the UJA,
and Bernard D. Mintz, chairman
of the campaign of the New Or
leans Jewish welfare fund.
Once again it is at hand —
Pesach begins Monday night,
March 26th. It is a time of
deep and challenging spiritual
import as the world struggles
for just the way of life Moses
envisioned in Egypt of old. In
the words of the Passover Hag-
gadah, that inspiring little pro
duct of Jewish genius and cre-
ativty, I say to you as we turn
our thoughts toward the holi
day season, “With song and
praise and with the symbols of
our feast, let us renew the me
mories of our past.”
Season’s Greetings
rod.
